In _Overcalls_, Lawrence defines double in this slightly different (but similar) sequence as a balanced limit raise: (1) - P - (1) - 1 - (2) - X. So he is kind of all over the place too.

Perhaps when Monaco has world-class universities that will attract top young talent for non-bridge reasons? It seems like this is something the US should be proud of. More generally, US bridge has certainly been helped by the Rosenbergs, Wolperts, Pepsi, to name just a few.

There are definitely some Putnam winners/high rankers lurking and sometimes participating on Bridgewinners. Though the ones I'm thinking of are excellent, I'm not aware of any that are "world-class" bridge players.
