about me

Becoming more active again in bridge after years of playing very little.  Sapphire Life Master splitting his time between NYC area and Las Vegas.  Not a total mad scientist, but I do prefer strong club systems, although I will reluctantly play "2/1" (technically a treatment rather than a system IMHO).  If you're a serious yet festive strong clubber or otherwise think we might be compatible at the table, shoot me a PM.

Currently fooling around with MeckLite as written up in Dan Neill's Standard Modern Precision.  Also playing Ken Rexford's MICS system in one partnership.  Interested in Granville and Burn's new "MOSSO" system.

Different Defenses Against No Trump in Direct vs. Balancing Seats?
Vs Strong NT, I use Lionel/Grano-Astro/Tralfaz (it has a lot of names) in all seats. Vs weak, I prefer HELLO--which is designed to be variable depending on whether you are in 2nd or 4th (or "6th") chair.
Pretend it is 1993 and you’re at a bridge club.
I'm not sure about 1993 exactly, but certainly as of the late 80s, "2/1" had not yet been enshrined as The One True Path. If your agreement was that a two over one response constituted a game force, it had to be alerted. In "Standard" bidding of that ...
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy
Many of the alpha, beta, epsilon, etc bids have fallen out of favor amongst Precision-ites. Instead, there is the 1 "little positive" response to 1, with other positives being natural and slammish (some variations exist, but this is the basic idea). xyz and reverse Flannery by responder are ...
Interference after Precision 2!C-2!D
OP doesn't state this, but the version of Precision 2 he plays has the following rebids over a 2 response from partner (without interference): 2 = I have a four card major (2 then asks for size and which major) 2 = unbalanced non-minimum 2NT = balanced ...
Mini-NT when?
Richard has it right. I despise all "pass forces redouble" approaches. I want 4th hand to commit immediately, rather than give him the option to pass and back in later.
Mini-NT when?
I won't ever play 1N doubled? Really? Isn't 1N doubled a great spot to be in if you know you're good for at least six tricks? Often an excellent spot at MPs, and a pretty good one even at IMPs.
2/1 T-Walsh
If you're willing to spend a few bucks, you can buy Dan Neill's summation of the Welland-Auken system (a very complex T-Walsh approach) here:
An Unusual Big Club System
+1 for MICS. My pard and I may be the only pair in the world playing the system, but we think it's a lot of fun.

My own experience with this sort of thing at this NABC: Much to my annoyance, my team was relegated to Bracket 3 of a Regionally-rated bracketed KO, even though we had requested to be placed in the top bracket. We lost our quarter-final match to a team of foreign players ...
