I asked a good player what he thought North’s hand was? Without thinking he said diamonds!! I told him that that I didn’t see how it was possible that North would want to play 2D on the bidding.

That's the point to see what methods people use. Obviously from the poll results most people don't have a mechanism for dealing with this kind of hand.

Thanks for the responses. My purpose in posting this problem was to see how experts handle the hand. I use the following approach which over the past ten years I have found to be very effective. 3Spades relays to 3NT followed by: 4Clubs or 4Diamonds is to play in matchpoints ...

David, according to most of the respondents that is not an option. You not only have to put a noose around your neck, you must jump off the chair.
