Expected turnout for the Soloway KO in San Francisco?
Agreed, Michael. And, forgive the cross-post from the Red Ribbon thread, but aren't we concluding that a new event style may be emerging from the Soloway format: a 2+ day event where the Swiss is used to seed teams into "brackets" for continuing team play - in your case, KOs ...
Soliciting ideas for a spring event preceding the NAP flight B and C finals
Good point, although 6 sessions seems long for an I/N event. Taking the strawman idea of a 4-session event where the first day is Swiss qualifying into 9-team round robins, first off everyone would Q into and play a full second day. But, perhaps it might improve marketing and ...
Expected turnout for the Soloway KO in San Francisco?
"Easy" in the sense that it's clean. "Very hard" in the sense of finding a suitable venue with reasonable hotel room rates that can sustain a profit with current card fees.
Soliciting ideas for a spring event preceding the NAP flight B and C finals
Let me make a specific event proposal as a strawman: A 2-day team event for players with less than 5000 masterpoints and the following features: 1) Swiss the first day 2) Every team entering plays BOTH days 3) The first-day swiss qualifies each team into a 4-team KO "bracket" for ...
Soliciting ideas for a spring event preceding the NAP flight B and C finals
The strawman idea, as written, doesn't ensure that teams play both sessions on the second day. One way to remedy that, is to qualify all the teams into a 9-team round robin bracket instead of a KO. ESD's will necessarily disrupt the social component of comparison. I agree ...
Soliciting ideas for a spring event preceding the NAP flight B and C finals
The unstated - or understated - stimulus for this topic is whether and how an event can be designed to be a significantly greater attraction than the status quo. My instinct is that swiss pairs is the only pairs event with such potential. I see the mitchell movement as reasonably efficient (though ...
Soliciting ideas for a spring event preceding the NAP flight B and C finals
Excellent feedback. Like Jim, I've tried Swiss Pairs a couple times. My experience was poor, but that was simply because of the new-ness of the event. The technology wasn't there, especially the first time, and players weren't clear on the process. I would very much like to ...
Call to Action: ACBL Zonal Governance Reorg
Yu: Your question means that the issue has been framed well to the public by the motion backers. The motion was presented as permission to conduct organizational experiments. The exact experiments weren't specified, but none of the experiments hinted at required a bylaw change as far as I'm ...
Lose the Trials Semifinal with Me, VII
What am I missing? On board 4 the Q finesse seems to bring home the contract whenever the spade king is 3-1 or 22 onside OR when south has A and spades can be brought home for 1 loser.
How Do You Play This?
I agree with Hank. With an imbalanced 3+-card limit raise I prefer a fit-showing jump shift. With a balanced or scattered value 3-card limit raise I prefer a semi-forcing 1NT, content to play 1NT if opener passes.
