about me

The good news is that I have won events in Nationals, Regionals, and Sectionals. The bad news is that it was 57 years ago, and the player who won those events went away about 20 years ago, and now only comes back for short visits. Sometimes for a hand, sometimes almost for a whole session; but usually he just stands back and grimaces about how I play these days. I used to be the only person in Minnesota who had won events in Bridge and Squash. Now I play in the Friday afternoon duplicate, and play pickle ball in the park with the geriatric set. I was always a better writer than a player. I have had pieces published in the Bridge World and the ACBL bulletin. Favorite convention: mini splinter. Favorite song: Love is a mini splintered thing.  I became a bronze life master in 1975 (it was harder then) and stopped playing in tournaments for over 35 years because of work and family obligations.  Now retired so I started playing locally about six years ago in Grand Junction, Co. and more recently in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Jess Cohen's bidding problem: AT J82 A987 K752
Hi Bard: The pair does not play checkback. They are students, and I am interested in teaching them the best way ti handle five spades and four hearts with a weak hand such as QTxxx Kxxx x Axx. What do you suggest?
How should these hands be bid playing 2/1 GF?
I think the hand should be bid as follows: Two diamonds (Flannery) two no trump( asking) three clubs (tree clubs, one diamond). Now you have established the eight card fit in clubs and a sigleton diamond opposite AKxxxx. Since you know partners points are in the majors you have to ...
challenge a star
Knowing the hands are from previous robot challenge matches may explain the bidding by a few stars who appear to be trying to game the robots.
challenge a star
It appears from the comments in the other thread in the forum that the hands come from robot challenges where the star has played, and thus the star is playing with a robot against two other robots. It would be interesting to have hands that stars played with their real ...
challenge a star
Michal: It is a matter of personal preference I suppose. I think match pointing against only one person is not that interesting. For example, I played a match with eight boards where I won three, lost three, and two were tied, and the result was a tie. The result in ...
IVATURY is Mixed USA1
The superb, though not formally constituted, Minneapolis junior training program produced two finalists in the recent USBC open teams,(Grue, Garner) and now two members of the winning mixed team (Weinstein, Garner). In retrospect it was the SVYP of the 1970s.
Where is the oversight?
Blakely was a district director according to the latest report from ACBL counsel. Does that mean he was an employee who was in charge of districts, or was he on the board of directors of a district? The court in the case cited below says he was a member of ...
National Champions in Limited Events: Fair or Foul?
Sathya assumes, as I did until this thread came along, that a national champion means you won a national championship, not qualified for an event in which you might win a national championship. What definition of nation champion are you referring to? How about winning a 200 table one session ...
Ruling please
I have no dog in this fight as I was only an interested observer. Declarer was a gold life master with 20 years experience as were the defenders Everyone assumes this is a club game. What if it were rubber bridge at a dollar a point?
Many choices, many levels
Thanks Dave: Yes are correct, I wanted people to be able to check multiple boxes and I picked the wrong format. Your suggestion makes sense, but I would have to renumber the choices, and that would skew the results since the earlier votes were based on a different premise. I ...
