about me

Trying to do what's best for the game, often by clearing up misconceptions and misinformation.  All opinions are my own and reflect no bridge organization or group.

Past: Served for 9 years on ACBL BoD, 4 years as BoG chairman, lifetime member of BoG, 9 years on D19 board, almost every unit job from grunt labor to unit president.  Proudest bridge admin experience was being "first spouse" to a great BoG chairman.

Current: Retired, but sharing my experience and knowledge.

Memphis Report from BOD Member, District 17
Mike is from District 7, not district 17.
Not Losing Money on NABCs
BY: Not being on the BoD, I can't answer that question. Left the BoD at the end of 2015. SM: Joe Jones is the ED and the CFO. The "Treasurer" is elected by the BoD from their membership. I believe that to be Claire Jones, but I could be ...
Not Losing Money on NABCs
BY: Yes, these are absolutely worth the investigation. Suffice to say that John Adams is quite correct - whomever created the chart of accounts for ACBL accounting many years back must have also worked on the "public" books for Al Capone and later for Enron. It's a Byzantine labyrinth. I ...
Not Losing Money on NABCs
One factor in "travel" is that the ACBL picks up the travel costs for the "closest director of highest rank" at all sectionals. This is supposedly offset overall by the "Sectional Surcharge". So, when a TD has to fly into Smalltown USA for their one-director sectional, the ACBL picks up ...
In the Well: Jose Damiani
Mr Damiani wrote: "To allow only one pair, one team to boycott playing against any players convicted would be a mess for the result of the contest." And yet, the WBF has tacitly allowed this in a de-facto way through their treatment of teams that have refused to ...

I guess I drive better than you, Steve.
Profitable For-Profit Bridge Clubs
There are some "expectations" for the actions of units and districts. From the ACBL codification: Interesting reading.
Thanks to Jay Whipple
One more cause, Jeff L: the fact that there is ZERO personal liability or responsibility that attaches to the BoD members. I remember several former BoD members who regularly posed the question "Can we be personally liable?" You could see the relief in their faces when told they were not ...
Profitable For-Profit Bridge Clubs
Honorariums to unit board members is an outlier. I'd probably say that only a handful might do so. As for that pot of money -- if he truly believed that he could tap into that from Memphis, he deserved strong criticism (at a minimum). That money is not ACBL money ...
Thanks to Jay Whipple
Just for clarification - holding the Fall NABC over T'giving was a huge "loser" in a number of member surveys done prior to making the change some number of years back. While it was deemed to be more attractive by those working and with children at home, far more members ...
