Eric, I don't understand your reference to “diplomatic immunity”. I don't need to make any arguments because this isn't a debate and I don't care. You can have the “win” :-)

I am curious why everyone (ok, might be an exaggeration) attribute so much value to passed/unpassed status. It's true that certain shapely hands are no longer possible when partner didn't open a weak 2 or a preemptive 3 (etc) here but when it comes to strength it would be very unlikely to find partner with a opening hand when RHO has (11)12+ and I have 14.

I often see comments to that effect, “when partner is passed…” when deciding to enter the auction or not (or how) and I often find myself disagreeing with how big a factor that really is. In certain situations it's definitely plays a big part but not as often as most think, IMO.

Eric, I don't expect to convince anybody. And you are correct, why would my view be worth anything? I may however cause some players to reflect and notice from now on which worked best on every similar deal they encounter. Many long held beliefs never get challenged because they just pass by and whatever bad result are attributed to ‘random’ effects.

When the exact same action was chosen at the other table(s) it's not even visible that another choice might have been better (or worse for that matter).

There are reasons why 2 may work out better here but I sense that spending time on listing and explaining those isn't gonna get me anywhere :-).

My belief has long been that bidding your long suit with 5431-pattern (as opposed to X) gets you the best at the table results. I've not had any reason to change that belief over 25+ years. As can be seen here that's a minority view with several theorethical reasons for choosing X instead.

Nice to see that at least one World Champion share my view.

I managed to get the vul wrong I see now. It's opposite, white vs red. Comment if that changes anything.

I would not expect such a good hand for 1, as stated above.

Then 5 depends on 2-2. Is that really a 4 bid?

I agree. 1 is somewhere between bad and horrible IMO. This is also from a bidding panel, but problem setting there was partner's hand over 2 (and this hand bid 1 IRL).

Can you construct a hand where 5 is too high, consistent with the jump?

Board 8. As of now 3 is the majority choice on the panel. It's suggested that 3 now would lead to the making 3NT.

This deal is from Spingold this summer, details will follow later. The hand was posted from partner's perspective, over 3C, on a european bidding panel. I thought this was more interesting.

IMO it's far, far more dangerous to double 1NT with the North hand than overcalling 2.

I can't imagine passing the South hand over 1. This is non-problem for me, which Jan knows.

The notion that 2 would be alertable is beyond words…

1st double is clear-cut as is 2D now. Non problem for me.

No, pard will bid 3NT, making. Sally Brock found the overcall in 2017 Venice Cup quarterfinal vs Russia and other table didn't. Rewarded with 8 imps. Partner:
