I wrote an article in The Bridge World about it. Sept 2012.“Scanian Transfer Cue-bids”.

I actually play that X of 2NT shows a single raise in opened M and pass + X is penalty. This loses the cooperative ‘catch’ but allows responder to show a more frequent/important hand type.

With the ace of spades you may slay a singleton K with the opener or be able to shift to a diamond.

I would choose 3C instead with your example hand, which I know many North American players wouldn't.

An interesting point for me is how many would bid 3D with just a minimum gameforce or if has some additional ambition. I belong to the latter category. On this deal, 3NT was bid at the table, losing a slam swing.

Bd 74.

This hand was held by Marty Fleisher, playing with Chip Martel, and X was chosen. In a most prominent contest. The other table passed over 1.

The perhaps most interesting ‘takeaway’ of this problem is if there's consensus whether 4D shows extras or specifically a minimum. Or just all ranges with 4+supp & shortness…

3D isn't forcing, and neither should 4D be, especially as a passed hand, IMO.
