I like 4, showing 3 card support for both and let partner decide if they want to go further. Being 5-5 in the majors my 2 AQ's may not be as good as they look.

I still have my original copy from way back when, autographed by Jerry.

Agree, Machlin's book is a must read. Is there any chance of getting this republished?

Peg, I agree completely. Am I the only one that finds this “comparative call” nonsense like a walk thru never never land? Deciphering the Dead Sea Scrolls is easier.

I would have opened it 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.

If South made one more try for the grand knowing they were off a key card, he got what he deserved!!! Pard does not have to have 5 diamonds, so you could be on a hook even if he has the ace.

Sounds good Henk. My preferred method is 3C=weak minors, 3D=good minors, 3H=weak majors and 3S=good majors. (5-5 in all cases)

You are right Eric, total masterpoints is a silly way to rate players. Many who have been playing for 30-40 years have totals far surpassing their ability. Some sort of “What have you done lately” system needs to decide brackets.

I agree that juniors, training for international competition should be allowed to play up because their demonstrated ability out-weighs their masterpoint totals. Other than that, playing up should only be allowed to make the overall event better, such as by having the same number of teams in each flight/bracket.

Do we all think North has psyched his 1 opening and then followed by doubling 3?

Asking my screenmate about his bidding habits puts too much pressure on him if, indeed, he has deviated. His partner can tell me his general tendencies without actually knowing his hand.

How about filing a recorder file on the director?

I think a part of the problem is that in events with two or more limits (like 1000+ and under 1000) the award for the 1000+ includes the tables in the under 1000 field. They have not beaten this field and there is no reason to assume they would. Sure, in flighted events flight B can win flight A, but why base flight A points on the fact that they have all beaten flight B.

I agree Purnima, we have had “elite” players around here that like to go out to a nice restaurant and have a casual dinner between sessions. When they wander in 5, 10, 15 minutes late about all that happens is the director tells them to try and catch up. No such luck for the rest of us.

Peg, you must be in the wrong part of the country. Here in North Carolina teams are very popular. A review of our unit's sectionals shows our pair games have averaged 44.5 tables and an average award of 18 points and teams have averaged 36 teams and an average payout of 14.8. A little less than pairs but not much. If it matters our starting times are 10AM and 3PM Friday and Saturday with 10AM and TBA Sunday, because meals are served and we start back when people are finished.

Another one I know of, from emailing her, is Lynda Carter, actress (Wonder Woman).

The biggest problem with bridge on TV is that it is slow. I remember an old black and white series, “Championship Bridge” I think, that came on Sunday mornings. To the non-bridge player I am sure it seemed to take forever and that is why it did not last very long. I do not think bridge on TV, as a recruiting tool, will ever work.
