I have pretty much described my hand. If partner passes 3 I will assume he knows best.

North's second double is terrible. Partner has denied 4 spades so why not do something else. 3 is a start, then correct 3NT to 4 and South should get the idea. With a double heart stopper (or close) South would have bid 2NT over 2.

You've got it. Opener was KQJxx, Ax, A10xx, Qx. Responder was A, xxxx, 98xxxx, 9x. KQ of was onside, so they got out for 1 , 1 and 2's.

They were not deterred. Over 2, the NT opener, with 5's to the KQJ decided not to bid them but decided their pard had to have some 's and balanced with 3, their 4 bagger, catching their pard with 6 and their only high's was the stiff ace of 's. Making 3.

Peg, no, don't abstain because I did ask for alternatives. Never played Capp, but might look into it. This is a hard hand I thought. I certainly don't want pard leading spades. Anyone know a good system to show a 3-suited? I think Brozel actually has a 3 call for this but it comes up so seldom no one uses it. and while I know it pard probably does not.

If anything, it should be a very minimum hand, say 11-14 without support for partner. Takes up too much space to be anything more than an attempted signoff.

Peg, 2 would be clubs and a higher suit, so I guess that is what you would have to bid here.

Selectors are humans and have personal feelings about the pairs/teams. It would be very hard for this not to be a part of their decision. John is right, let the teams play and winner goes. Sure, it might not be the best team, but they were today. If we are going to send the best team (in the selectors minds), why have qualifying at all?

Marty, you must be playing weak NT if you consider a balanced 15 a maximum.

Greensboro, NC is $8 per player. Game locations are free, per se, but a recreation center charges $1 per player for usage.

Eric, that was true because a team needs compatible teammates that are all pulling together. Often top pairs do not particularly care for each other. Everyone wants to play with friends, not just good players, regardless of the event.

Eric, many years ago in the U.S. our international teams were selected by picking the top 3 pairs. This seldom, if ever, made a good team.

Certainly at least playing in the qualification process should be required. Otherwise, a top pair or team might not attend and “assume” they would get selected anyway. The only exception might be if unable to play in qualifying was due to emergency situations.

Rich, I agree that STaC's should be banned. How can we award overall points when, at least around here, each game plays different hands. No way they can be compared. Only fair way is use same hands everywhere, and maybe have scores sent to one location and matchpoint across the entire field.

Michal, to see if I was totally wrong, and if anyone felt 4 was a reasonable call. Obviously not.

Peg, I agree totally. I must admit that I was shocked (looking at my hand) when partner won the spade lead, cashed 2 trumps and tabled the rest of his hand.

West has described his hand very preciously (10-11+ with a spade stopper). Any decision now should be East's, not West's.

Great article Chris. I agree that more of the dues should go to the recruiting director/teacher/club. That is who is doing the recruiting and they deserve a bigger piece of the pie.

David, would partner cue 5 after you bypassed cueing in 's? You could have QJ10xxxx of spades.
