Yes, it is a Steely Dan based arrangement.

The chorus is:

You go back, Jack
You go back
Do it again
Wheel's turnin' round and round
You go back, Jack
Do it again

a message from the producer, David Elstein:

“…the whole idea was ”master“ bridge - ie, how the best players handled deliberately problematic hands. Nicola (and Bob) carefully prepared a series of deals designed to illustrate tricky issues, and Nicola wrote an accompanying Channel Four book, where she expanded on each theme. Sadly, video graphics in those days were fairly primitive, and despite spending long hours in the edit suite, I could only manage what you see on screen. Today, of course, the graphics would be vastly superior, would be on screen whenever needed, and would be fully integrated into the table action.

”Grand Slam“ was much more accessible, in that it was not pre-dealt, and not so compressed in its design. ”Master Bridge“ was something that could never happen in real life, whether tournaments or competitive matches or simply at the kitchen table - an individual tournament where each of eight experts played four hands with each of the other experts, and the degree of difficulty sustained throughout so as not to advantage any pairing, yet designed to give every player a chance to shine (or not). So, perhaps over-constructed!… ”

(end of quote)

Notes :
Bob = Bob Rowlands
Grand Slam was broadcast in 1981 (BBC, 2 series)

Have a look here David: http://cbf.ca/kehela-sami/?

it starts out saying: “Sami Kehela was born in Baghdad in 1934 and spent his early years in London, England and Berkeley, California before settling in Toronto. ”

an update: Bob Rowlands set all 28 deals. Each deal had a theme, but it needed players to stick to no trump ranges as pre-defined. Rixi insisted on playing strong No Trump, so she was to sit north at all times, and north-south were to play strong NT in both rooms, east-west to play weak in both rooms. Apparently, Bob said, that Omar departed from the agreement and so the theme of the hand didn't work as planned. More later, after I meet up with him for a cup of tea.

James, may I make a suggestion?

In your introduction mention your sources, thank them, and make a small donation to Wikipedia.

Finally, set yourself up as an editor on Wiki (takes about 10 mins) and contribute 20 edits.

All of that will take you about an hour (delighted to help you, if needed).

There are many excellent bridge authors: Guy Ramsey (who was a household name as a journalist and novelist); Maurice Harrison-Gray (who wrote novels under a pen name); Jeremy Flint (Tiger Bridge is a great read); the prolific David Bird; Michael Courtney's book and tales, many of the extremely talented regular and occasional contributors to (USA) The Bridge World; dozens of writers in the British magazines especially post war. I could go on…

Moving on to people who research and collate archive material:
The hard working, zero or low earning, self-publishers, Richard Fleet, and Peter Hasenon's British Bride Almanack? Most recently Ken Deighton volume 1 …

Interesting to note that Penn and Teller are, by their own accounts, not good friends and never were.

I am in the process of obtaining permission to put on YouTube the 1983 TV series called Master Bridge. The hosts were Nicola Smith and Sami Kehela. At the end of each episode the hosts interview one of the 8 participants.

I hope to post an article on it once the sound copyright has been cleared (there are intro and outro music to get cleared, otherwise, all other permission has been sought and obtained).

ED - just to set you straight on a point of information - I did get payment (what I was due in the first place, so to speak), and costs. The sums were modest. There were no damages (because doesn't apply).

Barry: I am not saying this to be facetious, but are you saying

(a) that if you think if an unlawful act has taken place, and the lay person doesn't know what/if financial damage has taken place, then “its ok”?

OR

(b) are you saying that you believe or know (from industrial knowledge, professional experience) that no financial damage has taken place?

… I am more interested in your views if it is (b). And I'd be grateful if you can expand.

Also, not all unlawful acts result in financial damage. So I struggle to see the relevance of your last point. (examples unlawful acts that don't have a financial consequence, speeding, verbal abuse, some types of trespass, etc)

English was my second language for a long time, and poaching was one of the later words I learned. I used to teach English as a foreign language, so I am speaking from my personal experiences.

And I bet you many of them would not know what the word “poached” meant, unless they saw it on a breakfast menu.

Dominic: are you aware that Mark Horton is, apparently, a former “lawyer”?
.
What do you think of a former lawyer behaving as reported by Michael Clark?

Also, are you aware of the policies of the IBPA? … because only members can see the policies/handbook. I am told that only members can raise issues about members. Please will a member correct me if I am wrong.

Do you know if Bridge Winners or Michael Clark is a member? I don't think they are.

I find that it the best order to do things is find facts and then to offer opinions.

I am a victim of “breach of copyright” (a case that I won successfully in England, which involved Chess and Bridge Limited, and Mark Horton).

So maybe you might like to comment why it is ok for any former lawyer to knowingly and repeatedly breach copyright?

Yes. All paid. It was in small claims.

I have had successful court actions, in England, on two occasions, where the defendant was “Chess and Bridge Limited”.

Both of these involved actions carried out by Mark Horton. One of these was regarding copyright (unauthorised use of material in a publication).

This took place 20 years ago. I have shown Eugene the case papers for the copyright case.

Christina, I promise that I am not asking this to be facetious.

Are you saying that you know the copyright law, and regulations relating to Wiki, and you simply think it is a silly law/regulation, and need not be followed?

Or are you saying that you do not know the law, but simply wish to share you opinion?

I think that most intelligent and informed adults know what is nonsense and what isn't. The moderators of this site do a fine job, yes?

Thomas, perhaps you are unaware that in recent times (past 5 years) certain wrongdoings have been brought the attention of the appropriate authorities. In some cases the authorities have not responded at all (arguably unprofessional, but at the minimum discourteous).

When a well reasoned and well written communication is sent, regarding a serious matter, and there is no reply, then it is appropriate and relevant to post it on this site. Most would agree that it is quite expected of the publishers of the site to place it in a prominent way.

How about this:
Only show the % if board finished in time.
AND
Only show the frequencies if board finished 2 mins ahead of time.

It follows: don't show anything if late.

Optional: last 2 rounds don't show anything
(a) this stops shooting
(b) helps to finish on time

Unless I am mistaken, looking at the past 20 Bermuda Bowls
Only 9 countries have won:

Brazil 1
France 1
Iceland 1
Italy 2
Netherlands 2
North America 1
Norway 1
Poland 1
USA 10

(note that North America <> USA), see * below.
Amazingly, looking at the World Cup (soccer), the 20 so far have resulted in only 9 distinct countries

Argentina 2
Brazil  5
England 1
France  1
Germany 1
Italy  4
Spain  1
Uruguay 2
West Germany 3
(note that West Germany <> Germany)*

Interestingly, 1/3 of each table is the same (Brazil, France, Italy fall in both tables).

So … what can we learn from selection procedures?
Advice needed from those who are familiar with selection procedures of both Soccer and Bridge … (BTW, do these have anything in common with each other?)
