They usually do, even if we play against them every week. And if not, that‘s not my problem.

I use 2-way to differentiate between 2/3crd (P-1M;2-2 asks which) and 4crd. Losing 2m natural is not a big loss to us because we open 2N with 10-12 and clubs and 2 with 8-12 and diamonds.

I‘m with Richard. If he votes for a non-natural 2N, he MUST be right:-)

Dave you can try to regulate everything, but IMHO we have overregulated the game already. My normal light opening bids are 11+ (value, not hcp) in 3rd 9+. I psyche if I consider it likely that opps have a game, that would be at most 4/5 (hcp this time). Others may have other ideas. I couldn‘t care less anyway: I would NEVER call the TD if opps have successfully psyched against me.

We play 2 and 2 as Drury. 2 shows 2/3crd M so we can stop in 2M in stead of inviting with 2N. 2 shows 4crd support.

I seldom comment on my own polls, but this time I will give my reasoning for 6:
1) I couldn't see a scientific way to find out where we belong. In an uncontested auction I would be able to show a side suit that needs help. Now 4 would be a simple cuebid.
2) I might get a favorable lead. Even if I don‘t get a (save?) -lead, they might lead a stiff .
3) Opps might make a phantom save (just reading Kit‘s Matchpoints: Two Ways to Win)
I‘m not defending my leap to 6. Maybe those of you who don‘t agree with 6 can show me the fault in my reasoning.

You hold Axxx, x, Axxx, xxxx. Do you open 1st/2nd seat? Is it worth a limit raise?

We alert and explain 1N as „5-13“ at most 3crd M. Neither my partner nor I have ever bid 1N with 4, but I admit that I would have bid 1N with the hand given for the same reason as Michael H. My partner probably would bid 3 despite the 4333.

Like Felix, I‘d like some examples. Then I can check where your method is better then mine. We should also consider what we give up by having all/most other FG-hand start with 2.

That is what the junkyard defense is for: it is valid for all artificial bids unless we have a prepared defense for the situation. So in a way we have planned for THIS 3-opening. Should we have to play regularly against this 3-opening we might or might not define a specific defense.

Shape is the key to low hcp slams. No wastage opposite shortness is one element, the second is if either side has a potential source of tricks in a side suit that the other can support. If responder has the side suit we start with a natural 2/1, if not we start with Jacoby 2N where opener can show min/max and either shortness or a side suit. With a minimum FG-raise we can splinter thereby differentiating between voids and singletons, with more we also start with 2N.

„One clear outcome of the new policy is that 1NT-2M where 2M is natural and non-forcing would clearly be alertable (or announceable if the Regulating Authority so deems).“ No need to read the rest, this is enough o say no.

As W I‘d start with X. Not saying that I‘d love to bid 3 if it goes…(2);P-(P)-?, but pard will expect more distribution and less high cards if it goes (4);P-(P)-?.

I am not willing to define a defence against every possible, unlikely opening bis. We have our junkyard defence for that, which may not be the best in every single case, but at least it‘s easy,

There are several interesting points about the auction. We play transfer advances too and have two bids to show a 4crd limit raise. 2N and 3 with low/high ODR. The question is if I have the values for a limit raise opposite a mere overcall, possibly made on AKxxx and out. Pard will bid game if s/he has opening bid strength. Secondly we have a rule that if a bid forces to a certain level we are in a forcing pass situation if that level has not been reached. Passing out 3 would be impossible after 3. I would have to bid 2 simply because I have 3crd support. You have compelling arguments against 2, so maybe we should make better use of 2N and 3. Even so the question remains if we should have exceptions to our FP-rules.
My questions: how do you use 2N and 3 and how are your FP-rules in these situations?

As I have admitted in the other thread I would have to announce the possible hcp-range in ACBL-land. Why I then have to announce 14+ to 18- and not 13-18 is beyond me and serves to show how silly this regulation is. That has nothing to do with the fact that my partner will still expect the value of 15-17.
