I can confirm that Roman 1-openings are forcing, but that won‘t help Julien, because all 2-openings aree constructive, not preemptive. I liked the canapé part. Neapolitan and its successor Blue (Team) Club are strong club systems.

„Rubbish. If you have to think in advance about every possible response that partner makes, the game will become too slow to be worth playing.“ Richard, David, IMO the truth is somewhere inbetween. I am almost always prepared for the „usuall“ bids, including intervention. I can imagine that in this case I wouldn’t expect 2N and need some time to think it over. But no matter how long I think, Pard should either pass or correct to 3 assuming that I have equal length in the minors.

Someone proposed a rather simplistic formula to calculate the most probable number of tricks: #tricks=(hcp-20)/3+#trumps. I checked this against DD results of 5.000 hands played in our club and found it to be true 69%, a difference of 1 trick 26% and 2 tricks 4%. Since all we have is #hcp and #trumps there is no need to discuss improving the formula by adding short suits etc. Now let’s give opener 16 hcp and 2 trumps and responder 7 hcp and 4 trumps. The estimate is 7 tricks for down 2 69%, 8 tricks 13%, 9 tricks 2%, 6 tricks 13% and 5 tricks for opps making 2 2%. Even if you change the percentages to 40/40/20 the odds pro double are overwhelming.

I would double 2 with 4 and 7 hcp. We have the majority of the points and you are playing in a 7crd-fit.

„How would you prefer to disclose agreements to your opponents?“ I have a CC, opps can ask whenever they want. I am old enough to remember playing without alerts. I assure you that it‘s possible.

From W point of view: playing leb 3N expresses doubt about , 2N-3-3N no doubt > P
From E point of view: 3 is an impossible bid, obviously pard thinks 2N is leb, I have to bid 3N now.
Note: E doesn‘t need the alert to know that pard forgot „system on“.
And: there is no law forbidding anyone to fall on their feet.

„Did R&S really recommend 3♦ as a heart bid“ in a WNT environment.

Given the methods described 4 is the only possible bid. Might I suggest a gadget from Robson&Segal: 3 (unbid suit) shows a minimum raise (because of WNT value of 14-16) and 3 is a normal jump raise. That way you can keep 2N natural (knowing RF anything else is out of the question)

I don‘t know the difference between a „normal“ and a „reasonable“ double. I consider all my doubles „reasonable“ and so does my partner. As for my next bid, having not jumped at my first opportunity, I have a problem. But following OOs advice I will not try to right my wrong by doing another wrong.

Those were the days before alerts were invented.
Of course I alert a fit-jump.

John, where did I say I was damaged? I was just curious. BTW we didn‘t play against mom and pop. The voting is clear and thats okay for me even if the arguments given in the comments don‘t convince me.

Patrick, as I have written in several other threads, I‘d be more then happy, to play with CC only, no alerts, no announcing. But now that we have alerts and announcements they are in force for everybody. But you can‘t deny, that after 40+ years of playing this system bidding 1-2 with less then 4 cards has become an agreement, even if maybe it wasn‘t in the beginning. And while we‘re at it: I don‘t want people counting the number of my psyches!

Patrick, not having a forcing m-raise and „inventing“ a substitute bid IS an aggreement. Alerting is not about natural vs. artificial bids, it‘s about bids with an unusual meaning.
In a world where we alert inverted minors, although today this is much more common then limit raises, one should maybe expect that the substitute bid is not alertable, because it follows from not having a forcing raise.

„It seems to me that East had no idea that 2♣ could be manufactured.“ E has played this system for all of his bridge life, which is 40+ years.
„Nowadays 2♦/♥ are showing 5 cards and 2♣ is 2+c when having fit for the opned M“ So do I and of course I alert 2 as well as 2.
In KS reverses can be made on short suits as can 1-1M;2 and 1m-1;1. I have always alerted these bids.

That is only true if 1) a 2/1 with 3crd is considered natural and 2) there is another bid with 3352. if 1) the systemic bid with 3352 is 2 too and 2) a 2/1 with a doubleton is not considered natuaral then it is irrelevant that the actual hand has 2, 3 or more s. Opener doesn‘t know what responder has only what he could have for his 2.

No harm done, I was just wondering. We probably need EBU rules, as we were playing on BBO against a Dutch team. The point is, that most of us play inverted minors nowadays and we are not used to anything else. I knew opps were playing old-fashioned Acol and could have known that 2 can be just noise.

Why does everybody think that there are no wasted values in ? Opener knows that I do not have a -stop and won‘t have one either or would have bid 3N. Why then 3? Because s/he needs help in . Why are we in a game force? We‘re still trying to get to 3N and now know that doesn‘t work. 5 is a long way with zero keycards in my hand. Mind you even 4 is in danger, how about A, ruff, to A, -ruff.
