It's a mistake to play a multi with a strong option IMHO. The element of surprise when you pass 2D is most gratifying.

Ian - fair enough.
John I disagree. The hand is not good enough to open with a 1 bid and I am not going to pass. A weak 2, whether opened with a multi or with a 2M bid, is quite common with a 6-4.

Ian and Adam, here is a hand we bid to a grand in C some years ago in an interstate teams selection event, Butler scoring. If you are going to use 3m as some sort of ask rather than natural how would you get anywhere near this?
All vul

2 3
4N 7

4N showed 6S to 2 top honours and 4 card C support to 1 honour.

About half the field were in 4, some bid to 6, the 7 bidders failed as S were 4-1. 7 was a huge score.
If you are going to argue that this sort of hand is rare, I would agree, but I don't like to give up the opportunity of bidding these when they arise. I cannot take credit for these structures as they are an rdk idea. (Klinger.)

Nth should certainly look for a slam. The pass was very wimpy. South gets some of the blame for forgetting to open.

I voted other as I prefer Canape overcalls. Holo Bolo is also fun.

Mike Ma: “So if you are playing Brown Card convention, you should have extra responsibility to explain it right.” My view id that if incorrect explanations of “easy” bids are given, the players should also be banned from using these bids. They are easy, so giving an incorrect explanation is even more egregious. For example someone who forgets they are using puppet rather than normal Stayman should be banned from using stayman for the entire event. Fair enough, Mike?

All of North, South and East are incompetent. East largely contributed to his own demise. East has a double of 2NT and South has a 4C bid.

David Kresh: “Just make it an automatic zero for an incorrect explanation of a brownshirt bid.”

Totally agree IF of course you give an automatic zero for every incorrect explanation of ANY bid.

“The data we need is who else led what on the auction. Sadly long lost, I assume.” Tom , for a top player you make some odd comments. What was led at other tables is totally irrelevant. On this auction the H lead is a good lead

I would be disappointed if my pd did not find the heart lead. I think it is standout
