Michael - with AQx I would hook the at T2. My exact line branches based a) whether or not the wins and whether or not the 10/9 drops on my left, or b) loses (I will need the club hook).

Of course its takeout. In spite of the title of the post that doesnt seem like what you are after.

Heart tolerance? Probably but not guaranteed. I might need to x on 4153 to keep the ball rolling.

West might bid 4, but only to avoid a shoddy 4-3 fit, so dont see that as a culprit.

East has substantial extras and should move over 4.

KJx - five level looks safe

AQx - one of two hooks looks like a great small slam. You might avoid a diamond lead anyway.

By the way, this was the first board of a poor weekend of bridge.

I upgraded and cued 4, although 4 if understood is a better call. Partner held J97x KQTxx x Qxx and did not let me out. Breaks were unforgiving and I was -3 trying to make.

John, we dont play controls or 2 negative. Its simply waiting. Partner is unlimited at this point.

Finn: correct! It came up once or twice, but I dont remember any big wins for the treatment.

Wayne, this is a 5th bid auction. More, Ive never seen a reverse split between a direct and delayed call, but maybe it can be used as a mini splinter?

Of all treatments, next to kickback, Ive probably had more bad boards due to good/bad. I dont play it in any of my partnerships currently, but when I did, I had these rules:

G/B was on in “4th, 5th and 7th bid” auctions.

4th is: (1x) double/overcall (2+) 2N (i.e., 2N is the 4th bid in sequence.

5th: 1x (anything) 1y (2+); 2N.

7th (responding to a balancing double):

1 (2) p (p)
Double (p) 2N

I don't like rules like “game is not possible” because of its subjective nature.

Bid your way to the top was the first serious system book I read in 1980. Standard International was Romex without the hallucinogens.

I've been a system geek ever since.

I've considered this, but the wrong-siding aspect is pretty tough to overcome.

Transferring to NT (via 2 I'm guessing) could be a problem if they double the puppet.

Maybe its better just to shoot 3N from our side.

And yet, despite the fact that you know it's often wrong, you just go on stating ‘what happened’ - as if it's a fact.

Because an overwhelming amount of the time the play record is right?

The hyper-modern method is to give up playing exactly 4 and use 4 as a cue bid or something similar.

The idea of takeout just seems crazy to me. Why would we enter an auction like this at three level when we have no real hope of buying the hand profitably?

Even lead directing seems like a stretch. This double is akin to doubling a jacoby transfer so we need length and strength to double.

Seems that 4N could just be as ambiguous as 4 so its not risk free.

Hi Rick:

I would steer clear of 3 ways altogether. If my team is behind to two others at halftime, then I should be allowed to finish. Note that excusing a team at halftime doesnt solve the problem. I could come out and dump against Team A for 15 boards and play tough vs Team B and create havoc.

I like the idea of sequestering results during qualifying. Why not bar comparisons for the last ‘x’ matches? I believe Scott Campbell does this when he uses a Whist movement for 5 or 7.
