EW were damaged by MI. If we cannot award the weighted score we need to assign the best from likely results.
So, question how good is the slam is not the correct question, question is if EW had a likely chance to reach the slam denied by MI. There is no needs for chances to be as good as 50%, if we can see the reasonable line to get to the slam - we need to assign the slam.
Without the knowledge if 1 was natural or strong it is very hard to see how bidding would may develop.

I also would like to know details of NS agreements.
1. Is 2 reply on 1 transfer is a natural non-forcing bid or it is the some kind of super-acceptance on agreed ?
2. What would be 2 bid by North on the first round?

What I mean I am not very sure that pass by North on the second round in light of UI received from the absence of alert is 100% kosher and it is easy to imagine the situation that NS by their bidding will push EW to bad but makeable slam reach or will sac in 5 doubled for down 4.

It seems like you were offered a discount; they allowed you to get masterpoints earned for 8-9 years by the price of the 3 year.

Maybe if you will try to ask ACBL masterpoint sales person to let you to talk to her manager you can get even better deal?

So, how much is the price for a single masterpoint?
Does the price of a masterpoint depends on the color?
What about Black Friday sale?

If you do not want to buy your masterpoints, maybe they can sell them to somebody else?

So for using sarcasm. I understand the logic from the ACBL side, but asking member to pay money for the solo purpose of getting known number of masterpoints registered seems … (hmm I cannot even find an appropriate word here). And un-honesty included in order to return the person as a member does not get it better.

By the way, I just tried to find what is the purpose of ACBL on ACBL side and I am failed.

It is good. Now could I ask theoretical question.
1. As a paid customer you called some company, but you feel that agent you got on the phone (probably not a manager) cannot even understand the issue. Would people consider a question “can I talk to your manager?” to be a bad behavior?
2. As a paid customer you play in bridge tournament, but you feel that director you got at the table (probably not a director in charge) cannot even understand the issue. Would people consider to be a bad behavior to politely ask “can I talk to director in charge?”

Readiness to point out to the person in the position of authority that demonstrated him (authority) incompetence or unwillingness to perform the paid job duty did not passed unnoticed?

Yes, David, you are right. This is attitude can damage the future life of the junior.
Majority of us adults have learned to never take a such risk.

I love theory. :)
In a real life with exception of few tournaments from unknown opponents my expectations would be along the following lines:
“It was not alerted.”
“Just a bid”
“I guess she has clubs, does she?” (and look at the partner to check her facial expression)
“We are playing normal bridge”

I do not think so.
The shrug of the shoulders was not even mentioned by defenders during directors call. They claimed hesitation only.
It was something I saw and the kibitzer mentioned it when he was asked about hesitation without stressing on it.
Director never said a word about shrug of the shoulders.

“Computer games, video games, or other competing recreation” should not be one of the choices in this poll. It does not belong to the same family as other choices.
Every game eventually will die because it will not be able to compete with other available recreation activities.
It is immediate reason, something that is on surface.
Other choices are underlying reasons why it may happen, why bridge can lose to other activities.

How about this:
No lifetime bans but simply require not only “fully confess and express remorse” but also fully recover all damage caused by the action.
Lets consider every tournament there convicted player participated before spoiled by his action for every other participant and for organizers.
It is a direct damage.

For example: Lanzarotti played in Reisinger in 2004. We consider that his action null out the results of the tournament for every player who played there. How many players played there? How much each of them spent to play in average? Multiply these two numbers and add ACBL spending's to the amount. Make the same calculation for every other ACBL tournament he spoiled and ask him to cover damages.
Do not reinstall until he paid. :)

Of course it is equivalent of lifetime banning, but looks much nicer.

Sorry, not sure if my translation make sense, I heard that joke in Russian only.
Manager of some company complains that whatever he done he cannot improve the number of customers. Consultant reviewed managerial decisions made by company and asked: “Have you already tried to use crop dust against customers?”
(Based on decisions by management the consultant decided that management goal of that company is to get rid of all customers).

Bridge is such a great game that even ACBL management is not able to kill the attendance … at least so far … but nobody can say they are not trying.

“The length of a “minute” depends on which side of the toilet door you are on.”
There is no necessary people lied about their behavior, they may honestly did not notice the hesitation. It does not mean they did not use it subconsciously, so you are right (of course) in calling director, but not right in being upset with their ethics.

Mike, I believe you are absolutely right.
If you are losing money because you cannot sell your product the normal business would try to minimize loses by selling it with discount, so your proposal to give discount on entry fee for people who booking in the host hotel for that particular NABC seems the right way to go … maybe to late.
Unfortunately, my experience suggests that it is not a way ACBL will ever consider, but applying additional fee for participants may look very appealing for the ACBL management.

Sure, increasing the entry fee and giving discount to people who booked in the host hotel will work. It will likely cause some decrease in attendance, because some people will find they cannot afford to participate (or more fair to say the cost of participation for them became higher than benefits of participation).
I guess it is not a problem for ACBL too, they can compensate loses from decreased attendance by increasing entry fee one more time … and one more time … and finally problem will be solved because booking of large amount of playing space will not be necessary anymore.
I am sure it will be nice games with very high level playing field in the perfect conditions. Pity, I will not participate, I already cannot afford more than one NABC per year.

Hi Michael, correct me if I am wrong.
You proposal is to increase the cost of attendance for people who cannot afford to stay in the host hotel by increasing their entry fees as a punishment for not staying in the host hotel?

20 years ago I moved to USA as a proud owner of 5 Russian masterpoints. :)
I was assigned 1400 masterpoints. My partner (a bit more experienced than me at the time) was assigned 800 masterpoints. I guess difference was caused by the fact that I am wearing glasses that cost 600 ACBL masterpoints. :)

There are three different situation.
1. You play with your regular or semi regular partner. Even if you did not discuss particular situation you probably have some meta agreements or some understanding how partner will understand your bid. In that case you should alert and provide opponents information you have.
3. You play with complete stranger and have no information how partner going to understand your bid. (Very often case for BBO games). In that case you have nothing to say to opponents besides “no agreements”. This is only correct explanation, any other, including description what you mean by your bid, is misinformation. You duty to discribe your agreements, not your cards.
2. In between case. The hardest one. If I believe I have an idea how my partner going to understand it, I will let opponents know but my explanation will include words like “I guess”. If I have no idea, no agreements.

Additional question: what about dummy? Does he/she has a right to see the defenders' hands?
