Al. I have always appreciated your dedication. 1> efforts in computer bridge. 2> willingness to talk to the community. I will say that virtually no one from the WBF, aside from yourself, seems to feel the need to address the wider bridge community. I am strongly biased in that I have publicly written that Rona should resign, still I suspect anyone without a bias should want more communication from the WBF relating to how they should work to improve and support this game.

Mike. If what you recall is true that sickens me. I played against many extraordinary talents who died too young from HIV-related illnesses. Larry Edwards found awesome teammates for me as a young player. However I acknowledge there were many irrational fears embraced then and now.

As I remarked parenthetically in an earlier comment, I believe that Signore Rona should resign from the WBF. Past associations with banished partnerships and players gives his leadership a tarnished image- not to mention his attempt to impede Zia's address to the WBF and journalists following the Brogeland “revolution”.

Except for Al Levy's (presumably unofficial) comment, the WBF has made no public statements intending to bolster our confidence in the integrity of the game, nor any statements in response to this legal challenge to their authority.

I reiterate that there appears to be more than a little similarity between the WBF and FIFA, a parallel which does no one any favors.

I may have missed a comment in my first reading, but I find it dispiriting that there does not appear to be an “official” comment herein from the WBF or EBL. While my personal bias is that the WBF is like “FIFA-light” a corrupt, self-aggrandizing organization whose leader, M. Rona, should resign or be retired; still they could do the bridge public the courtesy of a public comment.
It is clear that these court-rulings put the integrity of our game in jeopardy, and counter-measures are required to bolster the game going forward, and insulate it from misguided intrusions by well-meaning but possibly ill-informed courts.

Way to go! I'm certain Sam will get a lot of teasing back in NYC!

Dear Avon,
Thank you. I did acknowledge your reply (keeping no names in the acknowledgement). Clearly the N hand would want to play game opposite a weak 2. I am simply curious about the auction past 5. I have no suspicious intent.

Thank you. Indeed i saw it elsewhere. However my biggest uncertainty is how S could rebid 7NT after the 5 call of North's. It seems that 5 could have been made on many holdings insufficient for a grand slam in NT.

Yes. Excision seems necessary. Perhaps certain WBF administrators will resign.

Count me as an extremely weak player! I find the comment <adjective deleted>. The strongest difference between the two hands is partner's hand.

(Because I have some inside info) I am very biased regarding this particular endeavor, and hence abstained from voting in Avon's polls. However I do care to clarify what I believe is an important point regarding some criticisms levied against these posts. The real issue is not just whether, by themselves, some bids seem outrageous. It is also whether any of them resulted in large loss of IMPs. For instance, suppose someone enters auctions many times, over more than a decade, with substandard length or strength. If he averages consistent positive results there seem to be two strong possibilities. He may be far ahead of his time- in which case his results should decline quickly as the rest of the world catches up, or he has illicit info.

One check would be to see if there is a striking change in bidding approach as certain technologies of bidding change.

phillip: does that mean you generally discourage (play low) with all length holdings, except a doubleton?

I play the jack, but only because I assume that you also play standard COUNT. With Qxx(xx…) in dummy, and NOT playing parity AK leads, my carding is COUNT not attitude. In the one partnership I have where the AK lead is parity based, I give attitude.

When I used to play modified Beta with Jesus Arias and others 15 years ago, 1 and 1 were 4 or 5 card suits canape if we had a longer minor and 8-12 points. Our 1 was 13+ and the system played very well and was GCC.
