Concerning the Dear Leader- from the final Bulletin from Orlando:

“Elisabeth van Ettinger, speaking also on behalf of Jan van
Cleeff, wished to know developments in the matter of
Fantoni-Nunes. Rona answered that they had been
declared innocent by the CAS, and so their sanctions have
come to an end.”

Bernie Madoff and Steve Sion also had impressive Wikipedia pages at one time.

Avon has had my admiration for a long time. I'd also like to extend deepest thanks to Bob Hamman for stepping up and making this book happen when other publishers were gun shy.

Chennai, September 2015. Zia wanted to address a pre-tournament chaotic press conference, I believe. Would someone who was in attendance please clarify for Mr. Lewis? My info is second-hand.

…which returns us to the glaring nature of Rona's leadership… does everyone recall when he tried to shut Zia up?

Michael, I appreciate your probity. At the same time it should be noted that the introduction of screens demarcated a striking change in the use of takeout doubles, without any announced change in general methods.

Here a counter-suggestion that may work in lieu of finding contemporaries with experience playing against the foreign player. Design an online par quiz which anyone applying for membership can take (and with varying questions). Assign mp's directly based on score. (If you want to replicate the ACBL “endurance” mp's then add an integer x years playing.)

I am not sure which requires more work, but new volunteers will need to be re-recruited and new questions made for the par contest. The advantage of the online quiz is that the person seeking mp-equivalents can take care of this himself.

Well there are probably many arguments against this as well… but just a thought.

Thank you MB. It is really important to hear from people like you and trace the evolution of ethics in our game.

If you win the A you seem to have 8 against lefty, J and J ambiguous. What about A, ruff D, pull last trump, heart to A, ruff diamond, finish trumps?

Justin: Thanks for your heartfelt essay. The issue of collusive/cooperative behavior in social games (games as Wittgenstein or a mathematician would call them) is a complex one. It is at the heart of how one crafts rules and boundary conditions of the game to optimize outcomes which are judged to be “fair”. It is as relelevant to police procedure and admissions policies as it is to basketball and bridge.

I urge you to not quit bridge because it has abuses, any more than you should quit society because it has unfairness… Sorry Moliere… Just keep working toward a more perfected game.

Slightly changing the subject of the post, but riffing in the ball park, would most people agree that interfering with the opponents' NT auctions has gone from maybe 15% in the early 1970's to over 40% today?

Dear Phil: I may speak for others when I say “WELCOME BACK to active bridge play”. It was good seeing you in Atlanta, and I know the rest of us will be the better for your keen insights.

I am disappointed and frankly dismayed by the response of the IBPA. It is bizarre to contemplate a professional society not mandating a code of conduct among its professional members. It seems that this would be akin to the AMA or the ABA (US medical and legal professional organizations) not being concerned with a member's malpractice.

It is quite clear I mistakenly asked for the English Bridge Union to say something official when my request should have been of the European Bridge League. I apologize for agitating in the wrong place, and renew my request for comment of the latter bridge organization.
