tooting my own horn just a bit… in 1990 in Invitation to Annihilation I wrote (in chapter: Tempo Tells) “If they hitch, they ha'ent”.
and I am sure someone must have said the same thing back in Hoyle's day, too.

A second-order comment: Joel Wooldridge is a “close” relative of Capablanca- great-nephew or something similar.

Hand entitled “Teamwork”, p 326 Feb 1997 ed. Exact hands NESW: qj2akjjt92aq2 kt943q76A43j9 a76t94k875k54 858532q6t8763. The author claims that the hand was played in Rome 1977.

Yes. I reread this exact theme in BwtBT a few weeks ago. If you want I can look up the exact hand Michael.

Thank you for the formal reply Dr. Jones. I am glad that you are willing to engage. Are you also willing to acknowledge that virtually all expert players are horrified at the decision in the Lanzarotti case and amazed at the “apparent” whitewash and backroom deal?

May I also laugh out loud at this BS ruling?

One vote that really matters would be a vote to REMOVE Rona from the WBF. I recall that he was overwhelmingly re-elected recently. What might that say?

Thank you very much! Russell Baker just died this year. My favorite year was 1972-3. We lived abroad that year and the year featured Nixon, Watergate and Fischer-Spassky among many other things. The International Herald Tribune was co-owned by the NYT and WaPo then, and the editorial page alternated Baker and Buchwald every day. Magnificent reading!

I am indebted to my teacher Dick Bruno for pointing out the value of a 1 opening here at IMPs. At MPs, in a predominantly “15-17 universe”, I think 1NT is best.

If that question is for me, the answer is that I could envision making six hearts opposite singleton-singleton absent a heart lead with the 10 coming down 3rd ruffing a club. Also that extremely negative holding was unlikely because the opponents had 10 or 11 Spades and my partner with several clubs and few hearts would undoubtedly have bid 5 clubs a level he was forced to in the first place.
