How about Q(J)x,J7x,AQxx,QTxx in the declarer's hand? Partner with J(Q)xx,98xx,Jxx,KJx should play the 9, not show count.

Value of reaching thin games on mps has not so much value relative to staying low/hiding one's hand, thus I value the option to be in 1N instead of 2N or 3/to reach 3N after 1N opening.

Isn't the lowest bid besides the responder suit and NT a better idea for default bid?

Here's a story. I was on a flight from Paris to Montreal, and entertained myself among other things by doing some derivations. I was surrounded by a group of apparently Canadian high school kids, probably not poor since their tuition included trips to Paris. At some point a nearby girl asked if those scary integral signs were what I do for a living. When I confirmed, she shared with me that scary stuff was something she would absolutely never do in her life, and that integration was unheard of in her high school. To look at in a wider perspective, I wouldn't say that kids in the Western civilization go through the same type of brainwashing as kids in the Soviet Union with the resulting Pavlik Morozov or the likes. But I would say that the media and the schooling system brainwash large quantities of them sufficiently to make them believe that the easy way is the way.

No upgrades on mps unless it would make me puke not to upgrade, e.g. change 2 for T

I doubt it either yet when it makes, 4 makes it more difficult to reach - two birds at one stone

Phillip, would you likewise torture JoAnn if East happened to bid again with flat 8 count to a successful game?

Change for the sake of change? True, by going a quick route to 3N a laydown 5m may be missed when 3N fails. Guess what, trying to explore what's better will elevate defense of your 3N contracts to the Hog's level

Forcing bids don't exist on mps

The rule of FP says that if you have to think it's forcing, it's not forcing. Two-level double only if partner cooperates. If you want to X them at the two-level, you pass according to my teachers

Oh well, I wouldn't expect that human-tailored heuristics like HCP could be a useful guidance to a machine

Information about this paper was already posted a few months ago and the paper discussed on BW. I don't know what's your expertise in programming, but what you wrote implies that it's enough to throw the problem on computer with enough power and get great results. It's far from it - the solution is only as good as the algorithm although apparently the more computing power, the wider the class of algorithms that may be applied. In particular "computer teaches itself, , without a human supplying value functions " does not correspond to the Y-L paper: they supplied the value function, which is simply the maximization of the expected outcome. This value function has even a name in economics - it's the risk-neutral value function.

I believe that even Michael would agree that the contact with DD zero chance could possibly be, weather permitting perhaps Mondays exempted worse than the one with 30%.
