Opposite 1NT you should want to show all your singletons I reckon. I liked all Alexander’s reasons plus here’s one of my own: to help identify strain.
My partner and I show shortage as responders rebid after a transfer (no jump required). If opener gives preference to NT suddenly the singleton honour can carry its weight in NT.
Now 4NT as quant is gold.

PS we have some system to show various 55 GF hands that supports this so probably not for all.
PPS this doesn’t apply when showing shortage as a splinter to a suit bid.

That is exactly right. A spade lead was not appealing from either side when the honours are split

I think this is a good point Richard and is why I open ended the OP. There is a chance this is a result oriented post by me.

I think this is a valid workaround. We not hung up on balanced hands for 1NT opening.

I certainly can’t post a 3rd thread on this topic. Was thinking about work arounds to this known flaw, but better to cut to the chase. Thanks to all the comments pointing in this direction and the auction suggestions.

We are playing 2NT as natural. Your reference to Cambridge Precision has been curiously helpful. It lead me to a BBO forum post that described at length various Precision variants. That is going to be helpful in my current circumstances

2 is not forcing so that risk is present. I’m sitting east and know I can lose the spade suit in this system. 1 seemed my best alternative at the table and would have worked this time.

A while back I made a personal decision to bring joy into our strongest club session.
I make a point of greeting my opponents with a smile and having a laugh wherever possible throughout the night. Thanking them for the match at the end.
I know the new players at this level and make a point of not being caught up in the finer rules if they baulk at a bid, or other UI issues occur. Preferring to discuss them quietly away from the table at the end of the session
This has cost me the odd victory and while I’m crying on the inside, I’m smiling on the outside.
I realised I don’t have to win to get something back from the game. I guess you could call me a serious social player:)
I know I’m not alone in our community and I know there is more I can do. It’s all in the attitude.

I chose 4 without any conviction, particularly at matchpoints where the game bonus counts for nought. I would show a limit raise with same soft values in a 5323 shape. It’s close for sure

I based my vote on this sentiment, but I’m still a Precision newb.

Yes. As we are an occasional partnership that will be our sequence. Though I’m intrigued by the transfers because I’m hooked on their value in other systems.

So I’ve had the conversation with the owner of the system and we have removed the 2NT control ask. So we open to exploring strain when needed now. Big rock moved.

Right. Thanks for the Robbie S story, great yarn and well told.

Thanks everybody for the sharing of your experience. There are both quick wins and next step changes present to be discussed with the partners involved. I am rapt with the responses.

I guess like Richard suggested this would be 3NT. Will be heading back to the system owner to discuss. I’m not finding a lot of use for the 1NT/2NT control ask, I’m imagining only using it for hands where I’m already looking at the best strain in my own hand. That’s not turning up with any frequency that is for sure.
