The South hand looks much more like a strong NT than a weak one. I like to play 1N 14-16, so I dont have a problem at all. But even playing 15-17 NT the good texture in the majors would convince me to open 1N.

After that getting to 3N is easy, finding the clubs is not. :-)

Playing Precision North has an easy 3 bid, in a natural frame, this is borderline. With the South hand, I would pass 2 reluctantly, hating the quality of my spades.

In boards like this, I feel so glad that I normally play either Precision or a natural structure with Gazzilli. Playing the system mentioned I will temporize with 2 and hope for the best. But I dont like it at all.

But he won't, not knowing that I hold the nearly perfect hand. I need to bid 4 to show my enthusiasm.

We play the following structure:
- With a club stopper opener bids normally as if there was no X.
- Without a club stopper opener passes. Then XX asks for further description and
opener tries to avoid becomming declarer (protecting pd´s potential club stopper)
3 one or two majors: Responder bids naturally
3 five spades
3 five hearts
3!N no 4 or 5 card M
- XX: suggests to play 3 XX

Yes, we have to live with that. But at the 2 level (and the opps not knowing about this) that might be less horrible than 1N ;-),

We systematically play 1 - 1 shows 3+ cards in the suit bid to avoid awful NT contracts from the weak side. 1N shows 8-11 and at least a partial stopper in both majors. And yes, I would raise 3 to 4 probably ruffing 1 or 2 hearts with the short trump holding.

For us playing the occasional 4-3 fit is much superior to horrible NT contracts from the weak side.

With 5 trumps ALWAYS lead one…..I have not analyzed but I think this is the kiss of death for 3 with 2N cold (2, 2, 2, 2 and the opps can only establish 3 tricks (togehter with their 2 spade tricks)

Well, the bidding isnt over after pd passes. And you can nearly always construct perfect hands, where a certain action might succeed. (BTW: How will you reach game after X with these hands? :-))
In my opionion, on the majority of hands 1 will lead to the best results with this West hand.

Would have bid 1 with the West hand (you will easily reach 4 then).Would have transfered to diamonds with the North hand after X. South will then know he has the nuts.

In my experience, slams after 1 - 1 will be bid in approximately 1 of 10 cases. It is important to get to a reasonable game most of the time. Of course, opener can have a mountain. But……

Nevertheless, everyone can play whatever he/she likes. :-)

This was not a statement for the whole system but for THIS sequence. In every system you have hands and distributions which cause problems. But here you have enough bidding room to show most distributions and limit your hands.

Your suggestion causes some problems, too. What does responder rebid with 3424 distribution without a spade stopper, for example? xxx, AJxx, Qx, Qxxx

With the example hand our bidding would be:
1 - !
2 - 3 and then
3 (if opener has 4) - 4
OR
3N - Pass
Or
4 - Pass

If opener bids 4 or 4 this will get clumsy. But pd knows that, too…;-)

Well, responder only has 8-11, so slam chances are normally remote. You bid 3 and if pd cant raise and limits his hand with for example 3N, do you still believe in slam?

We play after 1 (16+) 1 (8-11, <5), 2 (5+ ,)
- 2 exactly 4
- 2 5+
- 2N NAT, MAX
- 3 Diamond fit, 3+ , pd can ask for a 4 card M (or HHx) with 3
- 3 exactly 4
- 3 5(+)
- 3 Puppet to 3N with (32) or 33 in MM
- 3 N to play

The first double is fine. I don't like the responsive X, would have bid 4, not being ready to stop below game. (Then it is a piece of cake to reach a slam). But even after the responsive X, West cant only bid 3N with this monster. Obviously, South is having some fun with a heart fit and little else. I simply would have bid 5N - pick a slam.

I fear getting too high (especially at this vulnarability, where pd will stretch for a VUL game) or that pd passes, expecting more defense.
Would X 1 but not 2.

Well, facing a passed hand (in 3rd seat(!)) and being a passed hand yourself, do you really believe to buy the contract? I dont, so why bother bidding?
