Defence identical at both tables and I believe tempo was quick (I was dummy and had left the table).

Michael Ware has been insisting on problems being given in this format for years in New Zealand, and he has certainly had an influence on the discourse.

Second question: would your play change if West had instead ruffed with the 9 or 8?
Third question: which heart should West ruff in with holding 10-9, 9-8, 10-8?

If you told me pass was right, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm just not that keen to pass and cop it for probably a bad board.

Takeout, usually short in hearts (so that's why partner passed over 1D, they couldn't double with shortage in a major). I'm a little worried I'm undercooking things a little with 2 but anything else is too rich. Pass could work given partner usually has 4+ diamonds.

Also a diamond ruff. But mainly wanted to bid 7S over 7H :)

Hi Nick, I didn't play the hand (and lazily didn't look it up). I was given the problem with x's.

I think I played this hand. 5-8-0-0 missing the king of hearts. Our auction was (1C) 6H (P) 7H (X) XX AP. I was the raiser with one crucial honour to my name, Michael Whibley was my trusting partner :)

No break in tempo. I passed and it was wrong.

Avon, I've learnt to value masterpoints when I play in the USA.

I only found out my ranking in Australia this past year, but woe betide the foreign players in the USA who don't count their platinum points! Because those who don't, may end up not playing the Platinum Pairs…

(For those who haven't travelled to Australia, we only close off events to those with too many masterpoints, not those with too few. The exception is the national trials which requires special ‘playoff points’ earned throughout the previous year. There is no equivalent to the Life Master or Platinum Pairs. No, I don't think we are worse off because of it.)

I think my double on the previous round is just dandy. Can't raise now without any real assurance of an eight-card fit.

I abstained because I have no idea. Probably some diamonds at some level! What did you do?

Hi Jim, Merry Christmas. Guessing the hearts is only problematic in the five-card ending where declarer has played off the 10 i.e. stranded themselves from the dummy. In that ending, if declarer plays the 8 and West inserts the Q, there aren't 12 tricks any more because declarer only makes their two club tricks in hand (and none in the dummy).

In the six-card ending at the top of page 6, a heart to the 10 works fine.

I recently switched from 2 showing six to 2 being catch-all style for exactly this type of hand.
