I had a recent conversation with a friend that here (in Greece) Everyone thinks that the rule of 9 is about doubling and how they have misunderstood it. Now i see that this misconception exists in other parts of the world too (phew). As someone Ed stated above the rule of 9 is about leaving a t/o double of your partner and not making a penalty double yourself.

But why shouldnt they have a discount? dont you want young people, given that they want to play professionally, to have a reason to be preferred by sponsors?

I can see the logic behind it but i am not sure i agree with this. I mean if i can graduate by 22 or 23 maybe i dont so i keep the discount

In Greece also the discount is 50% for players between 18-25 which makes a difference because tournaments are usually 25 euro for a 3 day tournament so a junior only pays 12.5 which is quite more affordable and invites everyone to play every time

Are past tournament hand records available? Can someone find them online and test his skills ?

He is left with J of hearts and KJ club so now after the overruf and club return he cashes his trumps upside down. Kit either he begins by ruffing a diamond and going for crossryff or spade ruff club spade ruff and club

Steve to cater for Axx in the west hand you have to play exactly for that going down on any other layout so i dont think you can play for this. Also the double after you have seen KQ A AK points towards this distribution

His claim is not valid for sure. The problem is that the director must adjust to a result based on the remaining tricks where as the cards lie i dont think he can go down playing sth rational. His claim is very bad and he should be awarded a P.P. but someone isnt required to know the rules and when and how to claim for him to become a very good player.

So what will you make him play? We are taking about the best six teams in Greece so declarer's play can't be a beginner's

He Has to come to his hand to ruff the 2nd spade whichever way he picks (ruff a diamond or club to the king). after the 2nd spade ruff he just has to follow the same road to his hand and he makes.

Paul you are right but whenever the A is offside either tripleton or singleton (especially when tripleton) the hand becomes very difficult as a single dummy i meant whenever the A of clubs is onside whether 2-2 or 3-1.

Either declarer plays on crossruff lines (where he makes) or he returns to hand with a club and ruff another spade (where he makes again) you cant make declarer play half crossruff and half drawing trumps

You win against all 2-2 or 3-1 by playing a club from dummy after ruffind the spade then you can claim

1 with other plans i dont need trumps 2-2 to take 2 spade ruffs so it is ridiculous
2 i play the Q of clubs and if east ducks as you suggest he stays with A bare. So now i just ruff a diamond and i play hearts until the end. Better now ?
3 the problem is the rules say that the director will be in favor of the non-claiming side but he will try to be as just as possible and given that declarer played 3 rounds of hearts to discard the spade etc. director cannot deny that his purpose was to ruff 2 spades.

1 is ridiculous except if we are talking about beginners.
2 your calculation is wrong if i ruff a spade play a club to hand ruff another spade now i have Q in dummy and Kxx in my hand and if it holds i ruff a diamond and cash good hearts.
3 is close to being a realistic option but still he is obviously trying to take 2 spade ruffs as the whole play shows.

Edited: also in 2 i can overtake the Q with K so i dont ruff a diamond in case there is a “problem”

How can he go down with any reasonable plan ? If he goes for the crossruff he makes as the cards lie and if he plays a club from dummy after the spade ruff… oh well.
