If ever a funeral could be considered a love-in, Harold Lilie’s would be the prime example. The room was filled with close friends, family and many who knew Harold just casually and admired him. The rave notices of his warmth, respect and generosity went on for over an hour.

An Elegant Tribute!

John,

It brought a smile to my lips .. with your mention of bridge at UVA from where my daughter graduated (and learned the rudiments of the game herself). I actually was introduced to bridge at Columbia University the summer before I graduated from Temple University some 64 years ago. I saw four angry fellows screaming and tossing cards at one another in the courtyard under an umbrella .. and, of course, when I asked what they were doing .. you can guess the answer. Well, I became captivated .. though often frustrated . It was not until I married the late Norman Kay and after his death was wed to Aces on Bridge Columnist Bobby Wolff …. that I began to have the foggiest idea what the world’s greatest mind game was REALLY all about! At 85 I am happy to admit I am STILL learning! Bridge has blessed my life.

If this report is accurate .. Europe, this time France, can expect nothing less from what rates to be an attitude which will more and more attract cheats (bolder and bolder). The reason? It is solely because of the despicably lax and lazy treatment by the so-called authorities of obvious current cheats and dealing with the horrendous history of significant blatant past offenders.

Non-acknowledgment of the bye gone filth and squalor is a guaranteed path toward extinguishing our once majestic game .. never to return.

If we do nothing while we still have a chance, we are in the process of making our bed .. succumbing to the status of dead bridge ducks.

Steve, I get ill at the sound of the letters of the present ‘WBF’ and their blind followers. In my mind (and those of many well respected experts), they represent the evil that may eventually kill our once-majestic game!

It is sad that high level bridge table has sunken to this. … making bridge a game of total isolation. The creators would turn over in their graves!!

I have been singing Fred’s praises for decades! No doubt the greatest manner of bringing the entire bridge world together!!! Thank you again.

Cheers, Judy

My maternal grandparents were from 4th and Catherine almost a century ago. And I certainly do remember Gene London and Sally Starr. Amazing what Bridge Winners provides .. to unite people!

Ron, Do you know the status of Edith? I know she was just a few years younger.

George and Edith were dear friends of mine, my late husband, Norman Kay, and of course, Bobby.
I will forever savor the many beautiful occasions we shared with them. Our heartfelt condolences to the family.

Hi Tanya, What a coincidence you mention Germantown as I lived in West Oak Lane .. a fifteen minute bus ride away (and a super place to shop for bargains). Those were the days!

Mr. Caprera:

Though you quite vociferously indicated no interest in my reply, I hope that one of your disciples will reference the second sentence of the 4th paragraph of your June 17th comment alluding to Frank Shorter’s mission in the same breath with the ridiculous random comparison of Bobby wanting to be ‘moved up.’ It appears to be simply a careless misinterpretation!!!

Mr. Caprera:

I am offended by your ugly, ridiculous unwarranted attack on my husband Bobby alleging him wanting to get ‘moved up.” To the contrary!! No one is more vehement about keeping the status quo if cheats have been removed from the throne.

For your information, Bobby has been on the bridge scene actively for over seventy years. Besides having eleven world titles, serving as President of both the ACBL and WBF, creating the Recorder System and Ethical Oversight Committee, he initiated bridge into the school system in China (where a presumed 200,000,000 children are now learning the game .. much to the delight of parents, teachers and students). What has Zone 2 done about formalizing bridge here? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!

Bobby no doubt has contributed more energy, effort and brain power PRO BONO toward the improvement and furtherance of bridge than anyone in the history of the game.

Now .. on to your forty years in the practice of law. That is marvelous .. and I am certain you have given unselfishly of yourself toward that end .. though you have not done your homework on the history of Bobby’s unparalleled efforts toward keeping our game continuing in an honorable fashion.

Our jurisprudence system is totally unlike judgment calls in the realm of bridge. BRIDGE is a game totally unto itself. Just as the Board of Directors (for the most part/though not entirely) is a Popularity Contest .. our Bridge Judicial System leaves something to be desired. Enough said.

Hi Cameron,

It has been a long time since we have been in touch.

A mere “like” would hardly be enough to express my admiration and appreciation for your recognition of the spectacular delving and research by both Avon and Boye. We ‘oldtimers’ vividly recall the disgusting cheats of yore like it was yesterday. Others want to bury their horrors in the ground like it never happened!!
