And, in particular, the odds that Partner has 5 of that suit.

Aren't 1=4=5=3 12 counts hard to bid regardless of whether you use this system?

Not sure I would game force opposite a precision opener, but having forced, isn't 3 pretty much exactly what I have: 6 hearts, no stopper, no 3rd spade?

It's heartening to hear that you have hours and hours to spend poring over detailed notes for every different partner you might ever play with. The rest of us would like to know how to get reasonable defaults without having to belabor every point.

What would your score for the same two-trick misplay but undoubled have been? How many extra matchpoints did the double win for you?

If 2 is diamonds and a major, then 2-2 would be Pass or Correct. It's easier to remember “both 2 and 2 are the same” than “2 works one way and 2 works the other way”. So by this logic, 2 = PoC and 2 is just diamonds.

All this hesitation suggests the opponents are unhappy with the choice of contract. You are very happy with it. Why give them a chance to find their club fit?

Can I go back in time and bid 2 at my first opportunity?

Then how do you distinguish scrambling for a playable fit from a spade slam try here?

Looking at my own hand, it seems like a spade lead or a diamond lead would be most likely to give me an extra trick and a heart lead or a club lead just goes to a suit I have under control. If I bar hearts, I'm almost certainly getting a club. If I bar clubs, I may or may not get a heart. So I'd bar clubs. But that's just me.

Do I see dummy when I make my decision, or only my own hand?

I don't know at which point “the occasional psych” turns into “partnership agreement”.

If we can say “EW actions are normal” with a straight face, then I personally am going to have a hard time arguing that E's call is a “psych”. And I'm also going to have a hard time arguing that this particular auction is so rare that we have no partnership understanding about it.

Your mileage may vary!

DISALLOWED

6. Opening one bids which by partnership agreement could show fewer than 8 HCP. (Not applicable to a psych.)

Around the second time East makes that bid, East is in a state of sin. according to ACBL regulations. We know that is the partnership agreement, by the way, because West knows “partner … may be weaker”.

I … shouldn't I make a plan /before/ I decide where to win the first trick? Isn't the only thing about this hand whether I have two or three trump losers? So, sure play the A first and then play on trumps.

I appreciate the advice, but I am a bit confused by it. Which features of U. vs. U. would vary from partnership to partnership relevant to this auction?

I bid 3 with that hand. Either partner passes or corrects to 3. If the latter, I raise to 4 or make a slam try or whatever I feel like.
