You could also bid 2NT to show invitational strength with stoppers …

I abstained for the reason you can intuit from my original comment. To put it another way, I wouldn't have doubled the previous round.

2 would be “invitational strength” with diamonds.

Personally I'd take it as “pick a minor”.

In my methods, is double then clubs natural or a cue bid? If the latter then it seems I have no choice but 2 (unless I want to take a flight of fancy with 3NT).

The value of showing a doubleton spade is because the 1 bidder shows 5 or 6, so they now know whether there's an 8 card fit or not.

Your partners don't add a king to their hand to balance?

Preempter had –/A98742/KT7/QJ54 and Dummy had JT864/6/AJ843/AT and defending 3x+1 was … not a good score.

This would've been a good hand to make an invitational jump shift.

You mean you pause for a long time with a good hand and bid immediately with a bad hand? Or something else? Well, whatever it is, we don't play it.

If I bid 3NT, West is on lead and knows to lead hearts where East is known to have good cards over whatever honor Partner might come up with in the suit.

Maybe I should have thought of this problem before I made the asking bid?

What possible misfit? If they don't have hearts they surely have diamonds.

The other problem with 3 is I'll be poorly placed if the opponents bid 3NT or start racing towards 5 or 6. I'd rather bid 4 and at least I've eaten up two levels of bidding space.

I'll bid 4NT if I think partner will take it as “pick a round suit”. If I think that will be too confusing, I'll try 5

Because my spades are not very good, and East is likely to have length behind the good spades, I will try defense.

You get match wins for swiss also. I might say “same number of masterpoints” rather than “peers”.
