Does the sequence 1,4,2 count as a stop or does the 2 have to come on exactly the next roll immediately after the 1?

Aren't you worried you're going to be playing 2 opposite a lot of random 4324 and similar hands where 3NT is cold?

I'd heard somewhere that the Standard Deviation was 5.5 IMPs per board, but the link from Mike Bell's comment implies something slightly over 6.

All players make mistakes, good players less frequently than bad players. The question is an attempt to model the rate at which errors (“deviation(s) from good bridge”) are made “on average”, and from there you can estimate the probability that a good team will defeat a bad team.

They did this at the club in Tokyo I went to a while ago. It took me a bit to adjust but it was nice.

If X suggests takeout of hearts or 2NT suggests minors, I'll bid it. If Partner is likely to be confused by whatever action I take, then I'll pass.

We had a team of strong youths with few masterpoints and went to play in one of the regional knockout events. We asked to be bracketed “as if” we had 8000 master points, but we were told that it was very, very difficult for the tournament directors to do anything other than bracket you by your exact count of masterpoints or “TOP” because it “messes up the rest of the field”. I don't really understand why it is more difficult to sort the teams by stated masterpoints than by real masterpoints, but our choice was to plow through the bottom bracket and win easily, or to go straight to the top bracket and have no chance at all. We went with option one and won all our matches by dozens of IMPs, but we didn't like it.

Declarer seems to have played the 6 on both of the first two tricks.

I don't understand how the two sentences: “The director came over and after being appraised of the situation asked each opponent to step away from the table to separately discuss the infraction. After this, the director returned to the table and stated that each opponent had declined to have the bidding opened backup.” and “North called the director back and stated that had the double been alerted he would have bid 1 S and the hand would have been set. ” are consistent.

Most people play new suits forcing, so I was surprised.

If you get $30/year from all members and another $1/session (numbers made up) … perhaps ACBL prefers the 2nd alternative.

I know I'm off the beaten path with this one… but having played 1 promises 4 except 4=4=3=2 for a few years … It has made a difference for me … approximately never. But partner leads the minor I chose to bid more often than not. So my current theory is that with 33 or 44 in the minors I just bid whichever one I prefer partner to lead if we end up defending.

I think I'd rather overbid a bit with 2 than wrong side the NT with 2NT.

Maybe a better question would've been “what is West's X?”. I had assumed it was takeout for the reds, but much of the commentary (and the voting?) seems to imply it is for penalties.

In a way, my question was whether 5 made any sense at all. I took the view that “hey, I showed my hand, it's up to Partner to decide whether to save or defend”. Partner thought I was supposed to self-sacrifice. The idea of doubling with this hand never occurred to me, so that is a good idea. The advice to open 1 not 4 is also well taken.

On the actual hand, 5x would've been down 2 and 4 made.

The normal way to avoid this problem is to schedule your nation-wide events well in advance so the dozens of units/districts who are trying to schedule their sectionals/regionals can schedule around them. I've never read a complaint about a sectional losing money because of the NABC that waltzed in and stole all their tables.

Assuming S had the correct explanation of +, South would ____ over 4X instead of Pass.

Nobody has said anything about the heart signal on the first trick. East knows that South is out of hearts, but West doesn't. Does East really want West to keep playing hearts or shift (ideally to a trump) when in?
