So you can't preempt in hearts at all?

I guess I should have phrased the options as “natural, could be minimum” and “natural, better than minimum”. That was a key point in the dispute.

This isn't a responsive double showing approximately 5-5 in the other two suits?

If you're going to psyche your opening bid, the follow ups are on you. Good luck!

Sounds like you guys should play EHAA.

Actually we don't know what 2/2 directly show. They could show 5M+4m, (but then you lose single suited majors, of course)

Is 3 non-forcing, a one-round force, or a game force?

Well, it's a better call than 2, for example, but why lie about your fifth heart when you can show your entire shape AND precisely define your point range AND show your spade stopper with one convenient call?

I'd add that if you don't know how to make the first bid, maybe you should try a simpler system.

Has anybody actually ever tried the chess clock idea at bridge?

2 then 3 then 4NT is the approximate plan

Depends on whether I open 1NT with balanced 15-17's and 5 spades or not.

Well, if we start with the assumption that Partner isn't an idiot, we could conclude that Partner has something to say that couldn't be expressed by 4NT,5 or 5. 5 I guess would show the K, so we know that's not it. 5 would show a complete lack of slam interest, so we know that's not it. 4NT would, I guess, be ace asking here, so we conclude that Partner is worried about something that can't be expressed by aces.

The two interpretations I can think of are: more clubs than indicated so far … or extra values (continued slam interest) but no controls worth cue bidding (maybe he's got all the top hearts, for example). Maybe AQJx of hearts and AQJ(xx) of clubs but two baby diamonds and whatever in spades.

While KJx is clearly good defense, it is also likely to be good offense as well.

Maybe we should all play 1m-1M-3 as showing 6 cards in my suit and 3 in yours with 16-18, and then this problem won't come up anymore :)

Pard had xx/AJTxx/xx/AQxx and Declarer had Kxxxxx/xxx/KJxx/–. With both red aces onside, this went for a fat penalty for sure, but for the wrong side. -990.

@David, you say you would not play this method. What do you prefer to play over 1m-(2m) showing the majors?

You could also bid 2NT to show invitational strength with stoppers …

I abstained for the reason you can intuit from my original comment. To put it another way, I wouldn't have doubled the previous round.

2 would be “invitational strength” with diamonds.
