Isn't this too good for 2NT? 1NT here is 12-14, dbl then 1NT 15-18, so direct 2NT is 19-20? This hand looks like 22 to me.

Hmm, I'm surprised Chris didn't guess the distribution well enough to make 4, playing him for at least 3271. :)

We are both decent players but not experts. We've won some Flight A events at regionals and we came in 3rd twice in the 0-2500 Bean Red Ribbon Pairs at the NABC. We have represented District 14 in the GNT B and NAP B several times.

I'd be curious to hear of other 2 suit showing systems and why more people don't want to try them. I'm also curious as to how many have given up on the old mini-maxi style for two suiters. My ecperience is that many good players have switched to a 10+ style that's more overcall on up.

After a preempt my partner and I play that jumps in a new suit are asking bids for the suit jumped into. I think this treatment was put forth in “Preempts A-Z” by Andersen and Auken.

I would game force with responder's hand but I voted for abstain because I do not know what the followup bids to Stayman mean. If I bid 3NT now, won't partner assume I have 4 and bid 4 if he is 4-4 in the Majors? Did I have a direct 3 available over 1NT as puppet Stayman? Is 3M over 1NT a 31(54) hand?

In my own system I could bid 2NT asking if partner has a 5-card Major. If he bids 3 I'd bid 3NT. If he bids 3 I'd bid 4. If he bids 3 denying a 5-card major, I could bid 3 showing a 31(54) hand and let him relay to decide where to play it. Partner won't expect me to have a wasted stiff honor though. At mps I probably just bid 3NT if partner doesn't have a 5-card major. At imps, I could go either way but with stiff Ace or King I probably don't show the 13(45).

If double is really “penalty” I pass. My partner and I play this double more as cards. With a pure penalty I would pass and expect partner to double back in.

About four years ago I played in my first national Swiss. One match we played an Italian pro pair of experts at my table who opened a non-forcing 1C and played transfers over it. There was no pre-alert. Partner and I had never even heard of the method before and didn't know to call and complain. We assumed these super stars would be extra ethical. I was disappointed later to find out we were entitled to a pre-alert to discuss a defense. I'm still disappointed.

Monaco. Monaco! They broke my heart and my bracket. Don't get me started on Team Assael. All I asked was that they make one more giant comeback against Lavazza. Couldn't Geoff have been content to just win the Vanderbilt? He'll get the replica trophy and everything. But no, he also wants to win the fantasy bracket. Good luck to Team Bridgewinners keeping that $500 when you play Team Hampson!

I'd gladly pay the restroom surcharge if it would help to keep them clean. Maybe they could sell a VIP pass.

I don't like the idea of women's events but I do like the idea of people making a living playing bridge. Many female professional players make it by getting paid to play in women only events.

Also, As long as there are world titles for women only events, the US needs practice events for our teams to prepare for these world championships.

What do people prefer? Transfer Leb. or Rubensohl?

I have always used transfer Lebensohl as written up in this article by Larry Cohen.

http://www.larryco.com/BridgeArticles/ArticleDetails.aspx?articleID=541

I always liked the following version of Rubensohl by Marc Smith. Anytime I played it I had to review the notes. I finally gave up and just decided to play transfer Lebensohl.

Ed, your view seems to be that once the “convention disruption” has occurred because of the non-alert that the bidders should get the worst of it. That is a position held by many players, but not at all supported by the law.

After UI, the questions should be: is pass a logical alternative to bidding on? To determine that, one needs to poll players of a similar category to these players with similar agreements. I don't know what caliber of players these were, but I am with AWM that pass is not a logical alternative. More details about the players agreements could change my mind.

Unless your area is radically different then mine, I would guess there is still a large “kitchen” and “party” bridge seen. While the club may seem to sometimes include these people I would guess there are many more tables of bridge by the kitchen and party groups that you hear nothing about.

My grandma plays duplicate a few times a year, but she plays bridge five days a week in groups from one table to twenty tables. People in her groups rarely know Stayman but have been playing bridge for longer than I've been alive. They are as different from club players as most club players are from players who are contenders at the nationals. When people tell me being a life master is meaningless, I always think that I'd still generally do far better with a LM from the club than a non-life master from my grandma's social groups.

When I lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota the club had a 3-6 table Friday afternoon duplicate game. At the same time, in a room just across the hall, they had a 25 table social bridge game. Every effort was made to try and convert some of these players. No dice.

I love the fact that the suggested youtube videos that pop up beside this one are other Redbull sponsored competitions and events: motorcycle racing, cliff climbing, rowing, cliff diving, streetball, etc. I am glad these events are in the same youtube stream as bridge. Maybe some of our excitement will rubb off on them.

Do you think competitive cliff divers say, “Its so nice to see young people cliff diving.”

Can you share your agreements on how opener shapes out after the 1d-1M-1NT-2D sequence?

After partner opened 1NT and we ended up in 5C the opening leader asked what an alerted bid meant in our system. My partner responded that it was the “Billy Miller bid” thinking the expert would now what that was. Expert responded, “should I call Billy and ask him what it means?”

What is your favorite style of system to play? What is your preferred method verse the opponents strong 1NT and strong artificial one club? Do these change based on the vulnerability? What is your preferred NT range?

Is there a book sequel coming after you gather a few more hands? I would look forward to reading “Bridge Over the Edge”.

Many hotels need do nothing more than bury the event in their conference rooms where mobile phone signals seem not to penetrate.
