I can speak to some of the issues from the Director's perspective. But given that I make $5.47/hour directing (OK – I exaggerate, but just a bit), maybe I should charge for the information.

First, many club players don't keep a private score. And of those that don't probably 80% can't remember then hand when I catch them before they play another board.

Second, the fact that some players are alert enough to complain about scoring errors, just adds to the perception of other players that stronger players are being favored by the rules as well as their bridge skills.

Finally, there is the problem of not having complete control of the decisions regarding the game.

Says the guy complaining about WBF incompetence. They have been incompetent, they are incompetent, they will be incompetent.

A problem with no solution is not a problem. It's a fact.

We do have a new rule of general applicability in our system notes.

Some people have a partner that makes a point to carefully check the BM before approval and at the end of round. Even if he entered the scores himself.

@ Louis: They despise a chimera, an illusion. They project it from within to without and claim their unhappiness to be sourced from without.

But all is within. All that is good. All that is bad. All. There is no external enemy. There is no external.

Now . . . if I could just find a job.

Some bids are clearly constructive, 1 - 2NT (GF Raise in s).

Some bids are clearly destructive, the annoying . 1* (1/2/3 showing nothing about spades or HCP at all). * 17+ HCP any shape.

And then there is the gray area.

What is that raise? (1 - 2). "Partner either has 8-9 HCP and any hand with 3+ s that he does not evaluate as INV. Or, he has Qxx in trump or better and some shortness (doubleton or less) in a suit that is not trump with 5+ HCP.

And NS thought they could catch me giving MI. Partner lays down xx, Qxx, KJxx, Txxx. :-p

@ Adam (or Greg, or Eugene, or . . . ) Since you took the time to respond with your own complaints here (which I for one have listened to), could someone please respond here to our complaint? Even with a “We are aware of it and have <insert action being taken, even if it is just to refer it to your inside tech officer>.”

This might actually draw more spectators (and eventually more players) to the top levels. As we have seen on BW the thrill of catching a top pair . . . at anything is a huge draw for the game.

<in keeping with the light hearted spirit of the thread>

She felt misled by the bidding. I can sympathize.

The hand I was thinking of was JTx, T9x, x (or void), AKQxxx. Or similar.

But I have not the slightest idea why anyone thinks I am defending my bid in this auction in anyway in this thread.

And it's starting to get annoying.

I. WAS. WRONG.

The point is also this . . . what is a title?

We know, they know and everyone who cares knows all the facts.

Pretty much everyone here despises deeply the WBF. So why bother with who they proclaim to be champions?

Again, we know the facts. And we don't need the WBF to tell us who the champions are. And the sooner we free ourselves from that (and similar) illusion(s) the better off we will be.

Whenever I read “the ACBL should” or “the WBF needs to” I have the same response.

There is no ACBL. There is no WBF.

There's only you and me. And as between the two (or more) of us, I think the person more likely to do something about your concern is the person who cares enough at least to voice it.

But if your complaining isn't changing anything, maybe your actions will.

I would hate to have anyone quit the game because of my table demeanor or tactics . If I try any such shenanigans against you, it means I think you are big enough to handle it. Against pairs that I am certain will self-destruct, I learnt long ago not to press and just let nature take its course.

In the meantime, some things are more important than even bridge.

<As a relatively new player, and simply because of a quirk in my mom's bridge library of 2 books, I was something of a squeeze play prodigy. A more experienced partner that was mentoring me said, only half jokingly, “No double squeezes against married couples. Some things are more important than bridge.”>

So I would like to thank David C. for actually responding with a useful answer.

And the rest of you for giving the thread some heft.
