We have them get back into it with our social supervised sessions. We offer eight a week.
I get calls several calls a week where people are thinking of coming back to bridge after a long layoff (63 years is the current record). I tell them it's like riding a bike. Just jump in and see what comes back. And if you want to take lessons after one or two practice sessions, at least the instructor will be familiar with your game and would be in a good position to suggest the right class for you.

What should we be discussing Linda? Pick two topics and let's go.

About EZ Bridge and 0 - 20 Novice Games. What we found was that we had to limit the number of times a player could call for help. We now set that at just two. This was because the more experienced 0- 20 DUPLICATE players actually wanted a more competitive game.

The weaker pros get the weaker players.

Jane,
It is quite stunning to read through this thread and not find a single suggestion that's not on the money. I like to include match-point tactics and especially a lesson or two on scoring. You would not believe how many experienced duplicate players have no clue what doubled down 2 vulnerable is. Also, a half hour may be too long. Our four 99er and under games all offer lectures beforehand. We find that 20 minutes is about right. It almost doesn't matter the content. How engaging the lecturer is is key.

Is double for the majors now considered standard in this auction?

Bruce,
All my students are asked to count shape not sheep at night.
I give them the nine most common shapes and ask that they say them, often, and all nine in the exact same order every time:
The 4's
four triple three
four four three two
four four four one
The 5's
five three three two
etc

I also have them say the shape every time they sort their hand, every time the dummy comes down, and every time they figure out the trump suit.

Can't hurt.

Max, Jeff,
Sounds like there may be a wider gap between teaching children and teaching adults than I appreciated especially in the area of work done on their own between classes. Many of our adult students hunger for homework. It's one reason Best e-Bridge is so very popular.
And Max, having tried to teach play for forty years I fully understand the uphill battle you face. Even I feel I came late to the game. I didn't give up chess for bridge until my early twenties. Talk about a wasted youth!

The part about rote play not being wrong is so true. Though I am not a proponent of it, it IS the way a lot of our players need to start out. It is how they begin to learn. Not everyone is gifted.

Only two choices so far. 17 for 4H, 5 for 5H. At the table my LHO found an interesting sequence. She doubled my 2D response then followed with up with 4H when it came around to her. Not bad…got the lead in and showed something like this.

I don't think 15 to 17 is standard. In NYC it IS standard…period.

Again…if it is the “standard” 15 - 17 then it need not be alerted.

Just not 15 to 17 if that's what it is.
