So at the club this afternoon we had the sequence 1NT-2C-2D-2H-pass twice, 2 announced as Stayman, 2 not alerted.

The first time was by us and a spade was led which I thought was a bit odd (best lead as it happens). Now Ken and his American Lady friend spend half the year in Sheffield and half the year in Florida. I asked him if he knew that Julie had shown 4 spades and he said “no”.
That's a clincher for me, I was wrong, 2 should be alerted.

The second time was by our ops. After the hand had been played I asked South if she knew her partner had shown 4 spades she said “no”!
“Why would he bid like that then?”
“I don't know, he bid Stayman, I bid 2 and he bid 2 to play; that's all I know”.
“Of course I have shown 4 spades and 5 hearts, its just standard bidding” said her partner.
Oh hum.

Oh crumbs, and there was me thinking I understood basic arithmetic, well you live and learn (or not, as the case may be).

Gob smacked.
So doubling a 2 imp swing has exactly the same effect as doubling a 10 imp swing?

Patrick : do you employ a Martingale system with your opening bids getting progressively weaker until you go plus?

Its not pass or correct for me but it does, in conjunction with the 2 bid, show spades as well as hearts. Partner is expected to pass, even if 3/2 in the majors as I am at least 5-4, maybe 6-4.

…and we are normally facing a weak NT and playing matchpoints
(well, I am) so requirements are somewhat different.

Is this strong NT or weak NT or either?

I always pull (via a transfer) with a 5cM opposite a weak NT; and I'm pretty sure its a good idea. Could well be wrong tho'

How else do you bid a weak hand with 4/5 in the majors opposite a weak NT?
Similarly 1NT-2-2-3 (or 3) is to play; usually 6 clubs (diamonds) and a 4 card major.

MH: if you are playing a 2-winner imped pairs then there is no hope for you; effectively all the swings are doubled!

1NT-2-2-2 implies a weak hand with 5 hearts and 4 spades; I'm expecting partner to pass.

I have never seen anyone alert this 2 bid.

No , no, and no.

1NT-2C-2D-2H implies a weak hand with 5 hearts and 4 spades; I'm expecting partner to pass.

It's a natural heart bid suggesting a place to play; why would it be alertable?

It may be that the combination of the 2 bid and the 2 bid implies 4 spades but I still don't see how that makes the 2 bid alertable.

Stamp this out; simply call the TD every time someone opens 2 points out of range. They will get fed up of it, the TDs will get fed up of it.

There is simply no excuse for this sort of deception.

EBU players announce 2NT (if balanced); usually 20-22.

In my experience I'd say that at least 80% of EBU players would not open 1NT unless they have 12-14 hcp (except by accident).

“I at least want to be treated like a grown up person. ”

Then act like one and provide your opps with full disclosure.
You might not like MWC but its what we are stuck with until something better is adopted worldwide.

Assuming a field size of 10 and NV:

4: datum is (5x450 + 5x480) / 10 = 465
Unfortunately we don't have a continuous imps scale so we need to produce one. Should be -1,+1 imps all round I think.

3,3NT: datum is (5x140 + 5x400)/10 = 270
So the 3 bidders lose 4 imps and the 3NT bidders gain 4 imps.
