The world has moved on (well EBU has anyway).

ANY bid from 2 to 3 inclusive can have multiple options, which are less restrictive than the classic M2.

We play a M2, M2 and a M2NT.

M2D is a pretty poor weapon and highly susceptible to good defensive measures. The only reason to play it is it gives you more bang for your buck and frees up one or two other bids for nefarious use. M2D was definitely on the wane in ebuland before it gained a new lease of life courtesy of Lucas/Muiderberg 2s.

Exactly. We play a 2 opener as 3-11 with 4/5 cards in each major; plays havoc with most players but beginners have no problem:
“So it's weak?”
“Yes”
Bid.

We have a published list of members entitled to a sitting seat, about 10 out of 320; and also one who is entitled to a moving seat (he has a back problem).

Sometimes the movement will dictate whether a NS or EW sitout is best, a NS sitout can avoid a share for example. Otherwise we toss a coin.

If there is a sit-out then tables without a stationary pair are encouraged to toss a coin for seating.

EBU beginners are likely to meet the ‘dreaded’ multi on their first outing on a normal club night. We certainly haven't tried to teach our students a defence,or indeed defences to 1NT, weak 2s, Lucas, strong club, pre-empts…
So far, no-one has died.

You have just passed your driving test are on the Interstate when a pantechnicon looms up behind you and tries to get you to move over. What do you think should happen?
A) ban pantechnicons (the ACBL approach)
B) have an exclusion zone around newbie drivers
C) just get on with it

I would submit that under option C the majority of newbies, apart from needing a change of pants, would escape relatively unscathed and would have learned something useful.

Besides; not knowing how to deal with a multi isn't too much of a disadvantage since about half of those who do will get it wrong!

Don't mollycoddle them, how are they supposed to improve?

Michael: some of us have tried to offer constructive advice, some of us have had a pop at you. However, there is one thing you can be sure of, if you were looking for a new partner a large proportion of us would be forming a disorderly queue.
Keep up the good work!

Bill, and how then do I show a club suit?
I'm a simple soul, sometimes natural just seems best!

Its tricky when you are young and relatively new to the game. Getting good quality partners and team mates can be a real trial. We all have a tendency to show off our ability under those circumstances; sometimes it backfires as here.

Don't take it to heart; just try to pick your audience more carefully. Not everyone wants to improve.

We have found a good use for the STOP card; whenever I start commenting on something that just happened my wife can wield it to shut me up!

I'd rather keep the ability to show my suit!

Why do you need 2 ways of transfering to hearts?

To those voting 1NT: if we have the same poll in 3 days time how are you voting?

(Just in case you are not sure, this is a trick question.)

Dear Michael,
I read with interest every post you make on BW; you are obviously a keen student of the game and write with style and eloquence. Clearly you are destined to be a top class player.

However; please accept that on this occasion you scored 9 out of 10 on the dick-o-meter and then you can move on.

Best regards,
‘A well-wisher’

Good learning point, ask for advice, don't offer it.

The lady made a mistake, chalk up your plus score, don't rub her nose in it (that's her partner's job!)

I'm struggling to imagine many hands where we defeat 4 but don't make 4 or 4.
