thx
just wondering: might it have been a reasonable idea for North to begin with 2N over the X (still Ogust with the south player - a friend and occasional partner) and see if some info re South's defensive potential can be gleaned from her response. It might still become a decision whether or not to bid 4, but at least you might have more information. Or does one merely abide by the Law?

maybe 3 bidding polls: did you notice what East (my cherished partner) doubled on?

The “LAW” would suggest that 4 might be automatic. However, the holding is or might be imo a deterrent.

was wondering hw long it would take before someone commented about East's double of 2.
I apologize not editing the original layout: was late at night (like after 1am - early for some perhaps), and I didn't know how to do so.
As for my X of 4: what else would one bid?

Go to www.bridgesights.com, aka hondobridge/ hondo717 on BBO / Howard Schutzman.
He has a multitude on online interactive tutorials and other training materials there. The include an interactive version of Watson's Play of the Hand, Kantar's Modern Bridge Defense, the second part of the original Learn-to-Play-Bridge (not that disaster currently on acbl.org), Multiple tutorials/ interactive training/ teaching “movies” on so many topics including Bergen Hand evaluation, many Bergen things, bidding, card play, defense, competitive bidding: you name it, it's likely there. Multiple sources. Also has printouts of his many online BBO training lessons. It is really very good.
I highly recommend it.
Oh, yeah,…no charge
Good luck

let's see:
very high offensive to defensive ratio aka ODR
8+ trick hand-
4 comes quite close to describing my hand in 1 bid (a personal objective when possible) - permits partner to have some idea of what my hand is in order to participate in any decision-making. And don't we have a convention that would permit partner to check for controls/ keycard if the 4 opening bid turns him/ her on
No defense against s. want to make it as hard for opponents to find their spade fit or any fit or their best fit if it exists.
Since we don't appear to be playing namyats, 4 seems to describe this hand rather nicely imo Why open 1 and permit competitive bidding/ permit the opponents to get together in any suit when you anticipate bidding 4 anyway. Make the opponents have to start to share information at the 4 or 5-level: good luck to them and mazel tov. Try to get it so the opponents have to make the last guess on a hand.

of course, my partner firmly informed me that he wanted me to respond 2NT to 1m with 10-11, not so much as invite, but just to show balanced 10-11, at least at imps.
sometimes you just can't win/ there are more important things to discuss/ debate/ worry about these days
fwiw: i do not know the KnR evaluator/ method from TBW - never got the mag although i think it might be on TBW web site-articles. I just found it on internet - free
Thx

fwiw: I agree with you r.e. 2NT being an overbid with this hand.
Interestingly, KnR hand evaluator (Kaplan-Rubens) valued this hand at 8.9 while dk (kleinman?) rated it as 9+

Wdtrnr:
2 forcing to 3
1NT = 6-10
re partner's hand: we open 11-counts with shape and rebid, almost all 12s
1 can be 2+ if 4-4 in majors
check out the KnR evaluation of this hand

thx for responding

I voted for Nurse Ratched, not because i think 3 is or is not insane, but because I liked Nurse Ratched
Years ago, when I was a staff psychologist in a Mass state hospital, I called one of the nurses (a friend) Nurse Ratched. Almost immediately after I was ducking away from the book that came flying my way, followed by a second.
So please give it up for Nurse Ratched

Yes, the x, AKQJT8, KQT8xx, void hand was the companion. The underlying purpose was to see if there was a way to avoid playing 10 on the hand.
I was going to present this as an ATB problem but, invariably, someone (or 2 or 3) question why the hand wasn't presented as a bidding poll. and fwiw, i abhor the term ATB and try to avoid it. Maybe next time I'll present such hands in a format such as “could this have been avoided?” or something similar.

thank you.
Are you suggesting 4 followed by 5, or something else. You will play in 10 if you do so. and, fwiw, a 5 bid now also gets you to 10 when P takes a preference holding 2-1 in the red suits.

Thank you.
Certainly reasonable (if not commonplace), but not an option on this occasion. As stated in the poll, the partnership agreement is currently to play a modification of DONT in which 2NT is for minors and 2m = m+M
