Easy to miss a game playing it as 10 or 11-14.

That bid makes a lot of sense, greater frequency than 4 to play.

I would rebid 2NT over a 2 advance but this is certainly not ideal. Best to play 12-16 1NT balance over a major with Grant responses.

Whatever forcing bid you play to show a hand with limit raise values but too good for a limit raise. (Mini splinter or Bergen 3 bid followed by a raise to game.)

If all partner needed was this he could have key carded.

Richard, he was so relieved to hear spades rather than diamonds that he thought he should leave well enough alone. And his partner had promised absolutely nothing. I don't think it's inconsistent at all.

I probably could have expressed that more correctly, preempt is not the word I was looking for. 2 auctions usually proceed more comfortably if the 2 hand is allowed to begin it's description first. The exception is when responder's hand is very distributional and would be difficult to start describing after opener's rebid. That's why I play 2 dbl neg so I can wait with fairly balanced good hands, not having to worry about showing strength immediately. I know, bidding 2NT to show hearts wrong-sides NT contracts, that's why I don't bid it unless I have a very distributional hand.

I don't like the lack of intermediates with most of my cards in their suit. Where will the tricks come from?

I don't see any reason to preempt partner.

It really depends on partnership agreements.

It is a rock opposite 4 trumps and a stiff club.

Partner doesn't know about your K, you might have rebid 3 without that card, so he may not see the slam potential that you do. But I do see your point.

But, Richard, you wouldn't get there even if you bid 2.

“This hand is in my view better started with 2♣ or my preference a multi with the option of a strong single suiter in a minor.”

I really like the idea of multi for this and a lot of similar “death hands”. Too bad it takes away one of my favorite weak 2's and diminishes the value of two others.

Paul, that answers a few questions that I've been too polite to ask.

It may be “normal” but it's not recommended in the middle of a live auction.

Why not? 3NT should show a GOOD stopper and it virtually gives up on slam.
