Your argument may hold some water at IMPs (I don't think so) but not a MPs.

Isn't partner allowed to rebid 1 with 4?

Do you mean that you didn't understand what I was saying?

That's because you are submitting so many problems.

How does partner show a bad hand over new suit forcing?

Sitting across from Richard I would also pass, but then I wouldn't be playing 1 as forcing. Sitting across from myself I would bid 3.

Then why would you bid only 4? I wouldn't consider it forcing. Can partner expect 4 card support?

Don't know BWS so I don't know what 3 showed, 6 spades or a spade control (as in (non-)serious 3NT), but I am too good for 4 so 3NT.

Sounds like partner has clubs so I don't want to go past 3NT but I might regret that. I hope he won't bid 3NT with a singleton or void in diamonds.

Since I have no bid to describe this hand I will open 2NT which gets me well on the way to the most likely game. It makes slam bidding more difficult but, to quote the BW cliche, “Game before slam”. The only other approach I see is 1 (P) 1x (P) 3NT which is an underbid and makes it too easy for the opponents to interfere. It also lets the opening leader vs 3NT lead the automatic “highest card in his hand” to give them the greatest chance to defeat the contract.

So, in other words, you would make the same bid with either hand. Do you really think partner would protect when you have hand A but not when you have hand B? And you have no way to penalize the 3 bidder when he steps out of line?

What would double by opener have shown?

Craig, I am well aware of that concept. Note that I said “promised”, not “is assumed to have”. Anyway, 8 working + a 5 card suit is substantially better than a “random 7 HCPS”

I don't like my hand that much with the misfit.

I'm not familiar with your methods but I think with that hand I would have taken a shot at 6 over the XX and not given partner a chance to pass 4.

It seems to me that 2 just begs to be raised on a doubleton whereas 3 might get us to a makeable 3NT. I don't play it as forcing. I'm willing to pass up the opportunity(?) of getting to 4 on a 53 fit with this poor suit.

What would you bid with KJxx AKTxxx Jx x? If pass, then try xx AQJxx Kxxx xx?
