Depends on whether you consider 3 as acceptance or minimum, partnership agreement.

I play that double shows a good hand with a preference for defense so it's 3 for me. This is definitely not invitational so if partner goes, he should have no problem making it.

Even if 4 is choice of games, is it really asking for pd to bid a 4 card spade suit?

Are you saying that an original 4 would be to play? If so, that's what I would bid.

I hate 1NT because partner is always going to rebid a major, maybe at the 3 level.

Am I supposed to make a slam try with this hand?

Of course not, I bid 4. I was just saying why I didn't bid 5 immediately. I should have made that clear, sorry.

But now you will never know whether they would have bid it anyway. My point was that you knew (almost 100%) that they would bid 4 over 4 and now you have no idea what to do because partner would never double 4 here. I think it would have been better to have overcalled 2 and maybe get the lay of the land.

Responsive? Because opponent bid and raised his own suit? 2 because it is the cheapest bid (other than double, which I would play as penalty).

I can hear partner now, “Well, you pushed them into, and then doubled, a cold game. Nice job!”

No reason to think they have found a good spot nor that we can make something.

What is the difference between the 1NT call and a takeout double?

Need some more info from partner, I hope it helps. 5 now should ask for a club control.

I'm not raising clubs unless/until they get to 6, no sense in helping them.

I would expect 55 or 65 with reasonable suits. 54 vul would not make much sense.

Partner didn't double so I'm out. I smell a rat.

Yes, I know, but that doesn't mean I have to like it :)
I'm sure it works ok in uncontested auctions but becomes very cumbersome when the opponents are not so obliging.

DB, if they're that bad then they will probably misplay it several tricks.

1 originally. How can partner compete intelligently if your system forces a 1 response on this?

3, QJ is sufficient support but I don't like the rest of the hand enough for a game try.
