I'm sorry I'm not playing 4NT as RKC for clubs here so I wouldn't be tempted to use it. Is 4NT ever Blackwood anymore?

Odds are partner has at least 5 spades. If not, he may make it anyway.

As far as I am concerned they have already taken the last guess. West's 5 bid was under pressure. I am not telling them about our fit. I would only bid 5 here if I thought it might make.

I think this may be a little too good for 3, therefore I would bid 3 followed by 4 which should show this hand type, a splinter+.

At least that's what it means to you.

Pass, looks like partner needs 4 of 5 missing round suit honors for this to be a good slam. I am happy that we reached our fit, but it may well be a laydown 6.

I bid 2NT not assuming it was Lebensohl, otherwise I would have bid 3NT, but I can certainly see a case for pass, which works if partner has a fairly balanced defensive type takeout double.

This hand has one plus factor but several minus factors, 4333, 3 small trumps, probably wasted J and only a 5 count. Closer to pass than 2.

Martin, I agree with your comment but I think 800 is more likely than 500 and there is no guarantee that 4 will even make. I would never consider bidding 4, either now or previously.

Why didn't I bid 4 over the double?

30 or so years ago some friends of mine were playing some practice hands with a client who(m?) we will call Virginia. On one hand Virginia opened 1 at which time one of her opponents remarked that he held only 12 cards. Virginia had 14 so he chose one of them at random. Virginia was then asked if she wanted to change her bid to which she replied “Yes, 3

See if you can work that out, I was never told what her hand was.

Would you really expect partner to do something other than double? I know hands can be constructed where partner wouldn't double but I think they are rare and I am not convinced that we can even beat 4. It's very likely I have at most one defensive trick.

Since it wasn't given I have given it the most logical meaning by far.

Peter, clearly the passers intend to show a 2-suiter later if possible, and the possibility is just as likely as if the hand were opened. If the black suits were reversed I would open some number of spades (TBD by the opposing team).

Since 4 shows longer spades than hearts partner should know about what I have.
