What I learned from all this is that by a slight majority an immediate 3 was intended as a similar bid to an immediate 2 but with an extra . That was kind of my feeling. Thanks to everyone who answered.

I understand the situation but the problem is unsolvable without something akin to Gazzilli. So the solution is to give up and add something to your system. It's not like similar situations don't come up all the time.

Can't pass just because I may have a problem over partner's next bid. Double here is close to mandatory with doubleton or fewer s.

It doesn't make much sense to dbl 3 and then pass over 4 but since I wouldn't have dbled previously I can pass now.

4NT is right on points but not on tricks.

This is unplayable if partner is supposed to rebid 3 with any 18+ and 0-1 stopper. I think I'll just bid 4, that should describe my hand perfectly (any hand with 8+ and no stopper).

As a rule, I don't criticize partner's bids until I see his/her hand. But that's just me.

I personally would have bid 2 but wouldn't argue too much with 3. If we belong in 3NT partner will be more likely to ask over 2 than 3.

4 never works for me with this many tricks w vs r. Am I supposed to pass when they bid 4?

Not worth a reverse so… I thought this would be closer to 100%

No Richard, a slow 3 merely shows a bad 3 card suit (the way I play it). This is a good 3 card D suit and deserves a fast 3D call.

If you're that worried about the opponents, you had another option. This looks like a textbook 4th seat 3 bid to me.

Partners always stretch to bid game in these situations so I pass.
