I normally like to bid when holding rho's suit but this is ridiculous.

I would play 3 as a splinter.

I have to fess up, I had the other hand (- Axxx Kxxx QJxxx). Maybe I should have passed but partner could have had an opener trap pass. I thought at the time that partner should bid because +100 might still be a bad score and it was highly unlikely to get +300. The only time pass works is when neither 3 nor 2 makes. Of course, any plus will always get you something. As it turns out, both contracts make.

I have a sneaking suspicion that 3NT might be right.

Anyone have any idea what partner might have for the dbl?

I see no reason not to bid 2. Why should I misbid my hand because the auction doesn't sound right?

It was an attempt to show solid spades. This is an auction which doesn't come up very often. Maybe a mega-agreement is needed for jumps in forcing situations.

Partner's hand was AKQ8753 62 87 75. It was a 5 or 7 hand, about 50-50 on the bidding considering the possibility of a 4-0 split. I was given the hand and bid 4 over 3, the same bid as was made at the table. The person giving me the hand passed over 4. His contention was that responder should have bid 5. I disagreed because of the likelyhood of a spade loser even if partner had a singleton diamond. Also Kx(x…) of diamonds would not be helpful, 6NT has almost no play. I would appreciate comments on the 4 bid. Maybe an original 3 bid followed by 4?

If I bid 2 and then dbl later partner will not play me for 4 good spades. On the other hand, if I dbl now and partner doesn't bid spades I can always bid diamonds later if I want.

Richard, I don't agree that 3 is “supine”. The way I play it, 3 forced us to game or at least 4 since opener could have passed 2NT. Maybe I am in the minority.

I guess we are not playing GB2NT so I can't bid just 3. If 4 shows diamond support I am all for it but I'm not sure it does in this auction so I am hedging with 3.

Good question, probably bid 5 next. I intend to get to 6 at least but of course it may have no play, but I am optimistic since partner didn't hit 4.

Did I say that I did? Is this sequence defined in your methods? There was no agreement, that is the whole point. I will give the other hand later and see how everyone would bid it.

If you are going to bid 4NT anyway (which I would), why roadmap the defense?

Does 2NT show a spade stop?

Probably would have bid 4 at my first opportunity, maybe 3 depending on who I am playing with and what our agreements are. I personally think it is too good for 3.
