I don't think that hand would probably open 1 (or anything else) but I agree. I especially don't want to discourage a club lead.

This is matchpoints, not bridge, so 1NT. I love matchpoints.

What's fancy about raising your partner's suit with support and a ruffing value?

Maybe he doesn't want to invite 7 for whatever reason. If my partner bid 7 and it didn't make I would never play with him again. And I'm sure my teammates wouldn't either.

I don't think the K is worth much.

I don't like the idea of jumping to 3 with a 4333 8 count, especially at matchpoints. I'll settle for a plus.

If there were a clear bid to show this hand I would make it. If I could investigate 6 without going past 4 then I would do that.
As it is, I will bid what I think I can make.

Partner might bid 5. 4 should play ok opposite a void.

The most important feature of this hand is the trump support.

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about what it may suggest.

I don't think that pass or 1NT shows this hand. I was planning on reversing (since I didn't open 1) so I will go ahead and make that bid. 1NT still shows 12-14 but with a good spade holding and pass shows the same range without a good spade holding. Since the almighty ACBL frowns on a 1NT opening with this hand I would probably reluctantly open 1.

What would you have bid? I was thinking maybe 5.

Didn't I have a rebid in mind when I opened 1?

Would an original 4 by partner have been NL Michaels? I don't think he can have a hand which is only interested in playing 4.

I bet they take more than 2 on this one.

I would bid 3 with one less heart, so…

Playing 3 as weak is, by definition, messing around. If you don't like it then you shouldn't be playing it.

If you are playing something then you have to abide by it. Your sample hand is at least a king too good for 3, probably a K and a Q. Qxxx xxx xxxxx x is a typical hand.
