Donald, that is the reason why a lot of players have modified the rebid structure over J2N. A popular usage is 3C rebid shows any minimum over which responder can ask further with 3D if still interested.

When in doubt and short in the opponents' suit(s), bid.

2 has a better chance of getting to 3NT when it's right and avoiding it when it's wrong.

1 only if these opponents never, ever compete. No, never mind, I still bid 3NT.

Better to bid 2NT first and maybe exclusion later if you need to.

Lynn, back in the olden days (pre-stayman, michaels etc.) that's indeed the way it would have been bid. In today's world, where the opponents preempt with abandon, it's usually best to show 2 suiters at the earliest opportunity. If the bidding stays low you will still have the chance to show a good 65.

Why? You're bidding 4 anyway, why not show partner that it's a good 4 bid with a diamond stiff or void instead of an obstructive 4 bid? 6 will be odds on opposite xx Axxx xxx xxxx.

Richard, are you really good enough to come back in at the 4 or 5 level if partner doesn't make a move?

I see no reason to put my head on the block yet. I will wait and see what happens, not worried about getting passed out in 1 doubled. I plan to dbl back in over 2 and will decide later about a higher number of diamonds. I would probably pass if 1 comes back to me and definitely if 2.

I would play that 2 would deny 4 spades, just shows club support and LR+.

Even though I wouldn't open the South hand I think North's second bid was misguided. Why not bid 3 now? That should imply good club support as well as 4 spades. Why keep repeating the same message?

How would you bid a 7-4 hand? That's really what this is.

Do you play leaping michaels here? If so, I bid 2S. If not, I bid 3.

Not good enough to commit to the 4 level via either leaping michaels or bidding 2 now followed by 4 over their possible 4 bid.

I have never discussed this situation with a partner but I would expect him to make the same call as without the xx.
