2 questions:
Have I already promised 3 card support for spades?
Does 2 promise a suit or is it just denying 5+ spades?

Why 2 instead of 2?

Paul E., that sounds interesting. Can you give an example?

Start playing 2 dbl neg and you can rebid 3NT over 2 and not worry about it.

Richard, although I suppose I could dream up a couple of hands where I would want to ask for keycards directly over 3, I agree there aren't many. But since 4 is forcing and shows slam interest, I don't see any need for 4NT to be a slam invite. The main drawback I see is that it preempts partner from asking for keycards, which would enable us to show almost every card in our hand.

Paul, I don't know of another sequence that would show an opening hand, 5 card diamond support and a 4 card heart suit. I tried to think of one but couldn't. Do you have one?

1NT unless it is “sandwich” showing the other 2.

Yes, Richard, that's what it means. Do you like it?

I considered bidding 4NT as keycard since 4 is clearly forcing showing some interest in slam, but didn't think it would show me what I need to know. BTW, is that Culbertson 45NT?

I would have responded 2 intending to rebid hearts but I play that the inverted minor does not necessarily deny a 4 card major. That's really the only way to describe this hand.

Maybe with enough for a laydown slam partner will be able to take another bid.

And it doesn't look like we're going to be.

Martin, that is a problem, but not one I created for myself.

My partner would probably lose 4 spade tricks…

Why would I want to invite game with this misfit? And at matchpoints?

I don't understand opening this hand for the opponents. Anyone who thinks they can buy this at the one level is living in a dream world.

David, I agree, with the exception of 4333 minimum.

Pass, as long as partner is forced to reopen when short in clubs.

3 is clearly not forcing since it was not stated (3 is not a new suit). I am starting with 3 in an attempt to inhibit that lead.
