Why play it if you're not going to use it?

4, because I have support and it's my turn to bid, but I think it's just a guess. Maybe you get some “feel” at the table.

Agree, but if I did, I would rebid 2NT.

Paul, depends on your agreements. Standard is 8-10 for a free 1NT response.

Maybe he doesn't know if it is a make or a save (but I do).

“3H is a bid we could make with the hJ in lieu of the K.” I would probably bid 3 with that hand since if partner wants to save I would rather play in the safer fit. If you are saying partner has a 2 opener that he neglected to make because it was very distributional and then all he did was bid 2 over 1, I have to disagree.

I wouldn't play it as a forcing pass since, technically, 3 was not GF even though as a practical matter it may as well be.

RR, I wasn't saying I disagree with the 1NT bid, I don't. I was just saying that partner will be expecting a little more. I also voted for 4 but partner may be stretching a little to bid 3.

Richard, I think he's 65, and if so he is very likely.

2NT, it doesn't matter much what it shows in clubs. Responder had something in mind when he bid 2 GF.

At this point he has several possible hands:

4 spades - he will bid 3NT without slam interest opposite a min
5 spades - he will bid 3
Support for one of my suits - he will bid 3m

In all of these cases we should get to the right spot.

Yes, if the 3 bid was weak, partner's double is definitely not looking for a save.

If he were “loaded” in high cards he could have doubled rather than bid 2. I prefer to trust partner rather than the opps, who may not know what they are doing. “I had a really good hand, partner. Glad you were able to raise my suit! I would have liked to have been able to jump in spades but we play that as preemptive.”

RR, I am assuming that 3 was LR since weak wasn't mentioned.
With your first example hand partner would be afraid to double lest you leave it in so I am playing him for the 2nd hand and either opener has psyched or they had a misunderstanding. Either way I want to double.

RR, I agree but I don't want to push the opps into what I am afraid is a cold 4.

At this level opposite a passed hand? I suppose, maybe, but if you're really playing him for that, shouldn't you be saving? Can you give me an example hand? Everyone disagrees with me but I really don't see it.

I think that 3 over 2, since it is a free bid, would be considered a raise. Not sure I understand your comment, are you just pimping me? :)

If this isn't worth a reverse I don't know what is. If you're worried about 4 coming back to you, opening 1 won't solve that problem.

I agree completely with the abstainers but since I am here I am bidding 4. I thought about 5 but decided I didn't want to make two knucklehead bids on one hand.

Do the passers not believe that a double of 4 is penalty? Or do they think it is making? Something funny is going on here and I trust my partner.
