Well I never hear people say “Let’s play Bridge Bulletin Standard”…

I’d say the same thing and I am not sure why…

Is it fairly similar to SAYC, Rosalind?

This strikes me as something that won’t come up almost ever, but makes sense when it does.

In all seriousness, have you considered using LaTeX? It’s a lot like Bridge itself…high startup costs but you’ll be glad you did it. Just a suggestion :).

Thank you for your kind words, Bilal. I certainly didn't mean to create an adverse situation by posting these problems, as I think you and Eugene both understand. And I did indeed put a decent amount of time into doing so.

Because of what Frank Stewart said, however, (as Eugene explains), I asked that this month's for which the contest is still ongoing be removed from the site. Thanks again for your post.

Just to be clear, by the way, I am taking this action with no admission of legal wrongdoing. There are certainly ethical issues, as you pointed out, but I do believe this falls within the fair use doctrine. So I am doing this for ethical reasons, not legal ones.

Frank—Given my respect for you and your work, I will happily ask BW admins to remove this post and accompanying problems that I posted. I understand what you’re saying, and so I can’t imagine BW will tell me no if I consult with them about taking these down. (And please call me Chris; Dr. Donnelly is far too formal!).

By the way, the MSC Contest is open to everyone, subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

I have e-mailed Jeff Rubens multiple times to ask him about whether he approves of this and have also told him if he wants the material taken down I will happily do so.

He has never answered me, so unless he does I will leave them up. Check out posts from last month and I said the same thing then.

Do many pairs play this “Unusual Michaels”? I consider myself somewhat of a convention nerd (when it comes to 2/1…don't even pretend to know virtually anything about precision!) and I had not heard of it.

Towards the end of this write-up, Karen Walker has some good tips on how to defend against these bids when only one suit is known but two suits are being shown.

Agree this is a misuse but doesn’t seem nearly as bad the “4 is always Gerber” practices you seem to see so often. And I’ve never seen someone mistake Stayman as a convention that can be used even absent a single NT bid having been made by partner…

Ian, can you explain what you mean in terms of examples of Stayman being misused?

Sure but there is a lot to be said for the fact it may well he the most widely overused/misused/abused bridge convention out there.

Very good point. And I guess you also lose the ability to use 3 over 1NT as Puppet Stayman instead of regular Stayman, but this, too, I guess is a fairly small price.

Which I think is certainly within ACBL regs so long as properly alerted.

Isn’t this essentially the Kantar 3NT? EDIT: I totally messed this up. As someone pointed out, the answer is no, this is definitely different.

I see. I prefer to use 3 over 1NT as Puppet Stayman but your approach seems reasonable, too.
