Defenders can assume declare is missing the queen. Yes it seems like the pondering defender was trying to decide whether to win with the jack or ace. Everyone knew who had the ace, but declarer assumed the long thinking implied an original holding of AQJx. The thinking really just implied thinking?

Yes…the tricky part is that he could not allow his partner to retain the lead. He had to play the jack or the ace.

That was my partner's concern. Partner assumed he had AQJx, but with his actual holding of AJx maybe he was thinking of playing the ace rather than the jack?

If spades are 3 3 the contract makes because of the hearts. He doesn't have the queen of hearts.

Yes, or make declare think spades are breaking four two. In that case if he played the ace in tempo it would have been more effective?
