Full disclosure…. I wasn't at the table. I know the players involved. That's how I heard about the hand. I just talked to the 2NT bidder on the phone. He simply thought 2NT was the right bid. It was just one of those things…..rub of the green….whatever allusion bridge players suffer through :)

That's a great tip. I never thought about the importance of shape that way. Thanks :)

The partnership has a home brewed system. I believe 1NT does not deny a four card major and promises at least eleven points. In that context the 2NT bid makes some sense, I guess? I know that the one diamond opening promises at least 5 diamonds. I don't know for sure about 1NT so it is hard to comment. This hand caught my attention because an (awful bid) maybe wasn't so awful in their system.

Should opener show 3-card support or 4 of the other when he has both? ….Or is that partnership agreement?

Splinter bid….heart shortness, big club fit. You probably discussed it with partner last week, but you forgot.

With this specific pair (example)? How do you know they are continuing this way, and how do you punish them if they are?

Our club doesn't require convention cards. Many of our club's most consistent winners never even consider using them.
