Steve - I’m familiar with the meanings of the jump rebids of 3C/D from their use after 2C - 2D in ‘std’ however i’ve never been sure of the best approach with both minors or one minor eg super strong 1336 or 1345 this is a very low frequency area but very much hit and miss if it comes up.

Much to ponder here - my thanks to everyone who has responded.

That book was my ‘bible’ at university - we used to ‘ test’ each other by giving a quote and the other had to describe the hand it related to. I still reread it every 5 years or so but if truth be told it’s not very detailed and many of the problems with strong club are either glossed over or not mentioned at all.
I was converted to the ‘Cambridge’ precision style which Richards Fleet and Granville know well where you bid your longest suit first!

Thanks, as I was thinking of questions you were answering them further down!
2 things
1) I always worry about 4- 2 fits, are you suggesting that after a 2nd round 1NT by responder that opener passes with say 5314 shape?
2) Do you recommend opener rebidding 1 of a major or 1NT on 2nd round with 5 cards but within NT range?

It was the Kit Woolsey articles that first got my interest - but when I retrospectively tried to find them I couldn’t without going through all of them(lazy again). How did you know which ones were which?
And thanks for the links.

Presumably 2C was the system bid. I prefer the style of 2 of a minor positive as showing either 6 or if 5 then another 4 card suit so I would have followed whatever sequence shows a balanced positive without a H stop.

Ray - there's a bit of a difference between ‘Wild West’ and repeating a phrase that's been around for 45 years, moreover a phrase I used a few years ago on a different thread here and nobody said a dickybird.
Now you may say that any relaxation puts you on a slippery slope but we'll have to agree to differ on that.

Eugene - can I clarify if reference can be made to long deceased politicians? Though the person I included in my post is still alive any notion that they are in any way ‘contemporary’ is absurd.

Henry - or Bill Cosby or any number of celebrities who’ve turned out to have feet of clay, I know ‘outrage’ is a pretty devalued currency nowadays but lumping MH in with such people is in itself ‘outrageous’.

Tommy - for a foolish moment I thought you were being serious until you copied Nick Faldo’s gracious winners speech(but who had he copied?)

Sadly not a joke of my own creation.
Roman centurion goes into a bar
‘I’ll have a martinus’
Bar tender ‘you mean a martini’
Centurion ‘ if I wanted a double i’d Say so’.

Though not plagiarism I think this is worth a mention.
In the very early 80's I was told a very funny joke of the sort that's works best when someone you know is inserted as the main character. Whether this was a ‘new’ joke or something that had been around for years I've no idea but most people thought it was quite funny.
Imagine my surprise many years later when reading Mark's(with Brian Senior) book ‘For love or money’to find this very joke described as a story of Mark's called ‘The Lift’ which he had apparently written during the championships in Yokohama(1992?)and has been reproduced many times since.
Ironically he states that a 3rd version appeared in a book by Tony Forrester where in the British version the author ‘mysteriously forgot to acknowledge the source’!!

Agree - but we've already had a protracted discussion as to whether that still should be the case when playing reverse count.

Richard - you appeared to agree with Gary that a jump to game opposite an unlimited hand was crazy yet now say it can be OK if showing a specific hand type!(as I do).

Agree, I have reluctantly answered based on the options given but don’t agree with the options as presented.

I agree that in a sequence such as 1S 2C 2H then 4H is best used as a picture bid , but I don’t accept that after say 1H 2NT (if 2NT denies a shortage)that 4H should not exist. If eg showing a balanced minimum then let’s get to the likeliest contract ASAP rather than giving opps a chance to double/pass artificial bids.

Gary - for those of us schooled in ‘fast arrival’ then the weakest support bid is 4H.
3H as opposed to cue bidding gives partner the chance to pattern out.

Probably should have made that as a separate comment - the normal assumption would be that there will be 17 total tricks(9 S 8H) so that there is little to be gained by sacrificing. As it is there are 9 tricks in hearts and 8 in spades.
Though I personally think this an obvious pass I would rather double than bid 4S.
