Re the Reese/Schapiro hand. Though Reese was one of my bridge heroes(the other being Belladonna!) I reluctantly came to the conclusion that they were signalling in 1965. However the hand evidence(no matter how hard Truscott tried) was never that strong.
This was one of 2 ‘standout’ hands but I was never totally convinced - yes the hand looks ludicrous today(and not just today),as perfect an example of fielding a psyche as you’ll ever see. If you’re going to psyche a short suit(which Schapiro was prone to do) then you’re hoping that partner doesn’t have support (as in the case of the other famous hand) to do it when you ‘know’ that partner has 4 card support is just crazy. It’s been conjectured that Schapiro was careless and went beyond ‘tolerance’ but this really was beyond stupid .

I wouldn’t normally abstain just because I disagreed with the previous bidding but this crosses the line ,no-one prefers bidding a 5 card major over a 6 card minor more than me but the 1S bid is simply ludicrous and 3S suggests the hand has been missorted, Since the concept of ‘partnership’ has been abandoned I think that at the table I would in fact sacrifice.

I actually had this auction last year playing teams with partner bidding a delayed 2NT(red v green) - there was no UI.
I was sure this should be 3/6 but why had partner not raised to 2D on first round?(we were playing 4 card majors weak NT)
The BridgeWorld once had an interesting article re at what point you should play partner to have misbid/missorted their hand.
As it happens partner had a balanced 10 count(long story!)

I’d assumed this was posted because of UI in some form - if I’m bidding 7H now then what was the point of 5NT?

Partner would pass 2S with a 2533 14 count

There’s a good section in ‘The Lone Wolff’ about that partnership.

I’m still waiting(seriously) for the perpetrator of one of these ‘tactical’ bids to find their partner with support, however I’m only 63 so there’s time yet.

Avon - this ‘rare’ distribution that they mention in the 1959 edition is the kind of ‘lie’ that sometimes has to be made with ‘unbiddable’ hands. The system clearly states that 1C - 1D - 1NT shows 4/4 in the minors. All academic as I agree with the point you make.
I recall many years ago seeing a hand where Belladonna opened a light 1H in 3rd with 10xxxx when holding(I think) KQxx in Diamonds and just not been able to understand it in the context of the system.

It’s all very well ‘generously’ telling opponents that opening bids may be psychic but Ogust clearly knew that the rebid was also suspect and the partnership must have a big advantage re past experience in these situations - who was the first expert to say ‘Just bridge’.

One very minor suggestion re Page 10(which in no way detracts from the point being made) - I don't believe that in the original system that a 5332 distributio was ‘balanced’ so 1C was not supposed to be an option with that shape when 12-16.

I’ve been waiting for someone to post my ‘favourite’ so I can ‘like’ it but it seems I’ll be waiting forever.
It’s when declarer is in hand with the equivalent of AKJxx of trumps opp xxxx in dummy - they cash the Ace then cross to dummy to lead a 2nd trump whereupon rho follows so they think for a minute before playing the K.
Not far behind are the dummys who in all apparent seriousness say ‘not much for you partner’ as they display a hand with more points and trumps than declarer has any right to expect.

Mike - on the same theme (and discussed on previous threads) 1H p 4H p p x?
Is this pure penalty or ‘optional’(eg say a 3334 16 count with 3 low hearts) or is it a weak t/o say 4045.
Or can you agree (as in other contexts) that it can be either and partner ‘knows’ from his own hand what it is?

John - not in practise. I think this is a quite complex hand that that revolves around whether to start with 2,1(Q) or zero rounds of trumps.

Being an impecunious student I said that if he didn’t come back I wasn’t paying anything, so there was an embarrassing few minutes of waiting and then the diva returned as did normalcy.
