Ok, I was wrong. I can mea culpa to partner next time I see him :).

The part about non-natural 1NT bids needing to be specifically allowed isn't quite true…1NT can be used as a strong forcing opening under the GCC (a la Romex, for example).

Good. Only bad thing is they both were not banned from the game for life.

Judging by the 15 likes on Marc's comment, I see 16 people who are in serious need of a sense of humor :).

It's not that I'm bouncing checks, it's that I spent other money we had on paying down debt counting on the money from this check to be there.

I didn't wait for the check to clear because I've NEVER had this kind of a problem. My stupidity.

Heard back from him by email overnight–he says he doesn't have a Paypal account and offered to send another check (ROFLMAO) for the $75 he already used (three hours). I told him if he made it a USPS money order (which can NOT be stopped) that would be acceptable–as someone pointed out to me privately, that's the extent of his debt without a level of proof of agreement which I don't have. The fact I used other money before his check cleared is MY stupidity.

For whoever it was who speculated earlier in the thread, he had not shown a hint of dis-satisfaction to me. And if he stopped the check as opposed to it being a bad check, he stopped it after he'd taken two hours, and took a lesson after he knew he'd stopped it (from the postmark on the envelope).

The balance in our account was about $420. When I deposited the check, I figured it would be clearing today, so I used the money in the account to pay off a couple of balances that I'm paying off monthly–money we need for other purposes–so it's a bind either way. My stupidity for not waiting for it to clear before doing that.

Thanks–that was my thinking also.

I'm stiffed for $75 in services. I'm stiffed for $400 in cash because I have to make it good (I used money for bills as soon as I deposited the check).

The way I've worked it is that the person pays in advance and purchases a number of hours. In this case, it was for 16 hours of online lessons. I did three hours with them before finding out this morning the check bounced.

I didn't threaten them at all–I told them that I'm sure there was an accidental issue, but that I had been notified this morning that their check bounced, and asked if they could please Paypal me the funds to cover it. They responded “No, I can't do that.” I started to ask them how they would like to make this right, and in the middle of my sentence I got “**** you.” and was disconnected. Subsequent calls have gone to voicemail.

I KNOW I can be brusque sometimes–it just so happens that I had a friend over when I found out the check had bounced. He made me wait 15 minutes and cool off before I called the person back.

I'd love to flame this person into oblivion, but right now my main concern is persuading them that it's in their interest to make this right–I'd love to have both, but I don't want to call them out publicly before I try to see if they will see reason.

I was stupid. The person asked if I'd take a check, and we needed the money. I should have told him Paypal or nothing.

A strange world we live in when someone can bounce a check that big, refuse to honor it, and it's not a criminal matter… :(

Why bother? How about because it's called full disclosure?
