It's not entirely clear that he expressed criticism rather than bewilderment.

This presumes that the 2m bid shows four cards, which it often doesn't in the given sequence.

We have a claim of “I'll give you a diamond”, the assumption being that the rest of his cards are high, so we follow that line and he gives up the Q.

The King takes it and N returns the A, which is ruffed. Declarer now takes his A, N discarding the Jack, and starts to run the clubs. South takes a trump and two further diamonds. Down two.

I've heard it said… “I play Precision, I don't need a rebid” :-j

Likewise, Ian, I ask them either to tell me something worth knowing or just to get on with it, if they feel confident in what should happen next.

Marshall - that's pretty much what I said. Thanks for clarifying my post if it wasn't clear.

A world-class player is someone who can count to 13 four times in five minutes.

I can't believe we're arguing about this. Amongst other things, partner's bid asks for a stopper, so, partner has asked for a stopper…

When I first took up my partner's highly artificial strong club system, there were several times that I alerted and, when asked, simply said, “No idea”.

Yes, asks for a stopper or something worth knowing about.

It's okay, everyone, it's just a hesitation.

Is this in a 5cm environment or does 1 only promise four? I'm assuming five.

In my view, partner has asked for a stopper in spades after you've told him that you have the other suits and tolerance for hearts. Your 3 bid is simply saying that you have nothing extra to say. Of course, you've already shown some “values”, so whether 3 is forcing depends on whether partner's 2 shows a strong hand, which I think it should be.

Edit:
Let's just say that I'm not going to get stroppy if partner decides to pass.

Nor, from Michael's comments, do I believe that purposely watching people for a reaction is part of his repertoire at the table; he's merely being alert for it. I think we're all in the middle of a misunderstanding here.

A top or a bottom. Let the cards decide.

Opponents are ill-advised to ask for a full review of the auction so far while it is still live, since both you and your partner are involved in that process, as you each disclose the meaning of the other's bids. Of course, this is going to lead to UI but that's partner's problem not yours. Your priority in that situation is to avoid giving MI regarding your partner's bids. Keeping quiet would be giving MI to your opponents if partner's explanation of your bids leads them to false conclusions regarding his bids. Your partner has already given MI regarding your bids.

The actual auction, still sitting on the table, is AI to all players, so it's a foggy area as to partner “waking up”, due to your explanation of his 2 bid, but at least then he can correct the incorrect explanation given for your 2 bid.

Don't we all have our senses on full alert during a hand? It's expected and called “table feel”.

It begins with… “What do you mean by ‘weak’?”. I think South fulfilled his obligations.

I recently had something similar to Kit's situation. I'd just led over to the king, planning to finesse on the way back. I led small from dummy and, as RHO played small, I noticed a very slight change in the breathing of LHO, I went up Ace and dropped the queen.

“Bet it wasn't in div 1 or 2….”
Close but no coconut; it was Div 2. North had opened 1NT with a 4225 shape and 13 points in the black suits. Responder had the red suits covered and they were cold for 9 tricks but found another somewhere. I remember playing the hand in 3S, making, and wondering whether we could have reached 3NT.

I've left partner in once after a mini and once with 7 points after a weak NT. I knew that all of my points, what there were of them, were working and sitting over the doubler, so I left partner to play it. Each of the two times ended in +1. I can't claim decent oppo, though they were always making DD.
