Well, our agreement, albeit not common, is that 2 there is not forcing. The other option is bidding 3 instead of 2NT, then opener bids 3 and responder places the contract.

Having said all of that, it's not clear to me that 4 is better than 3NT. You always lose 3 aces and have to pick up the J if possible.

Why no raise?
After the 1 bid, any number of spades would be a distortion, and after the 2NT bid, a 3 bid would show extras beyond a simple reverse.
Finally, after 3NT there is no way for N to know that S held a 5-card suit.

One problem with a direct 6 is that if they do cash two diamonds, your partner and teammates are not going to be happy with you.

I led A at the table which in theory allows declarer to make 4. The only lead that holds it to 3 is a . I was wondering if people would lead a from this holding. Apparently not.

5 as exclusion rather than 5NT would allow you to get out in 5 in the extremely unlikely event that opener has neither honor.

I start with a double followed by some number of NT, depending on what happens.

I find bridge goes better when partner is happy with me. I will co-operate every time, especially since my most frequent partner doesn't drink beer so I'd be off the hook anyway.

T1 Spade
T2 K
T3 hook losing to Q
T4 Spade
T5 A
T6 A
T7 ruff (now I know they are 4-3
T8 to dummy

etc.

Maybe T8 is incorrect but I knew my J would be good.

I still needed spades to behave and player with long trump to hold at least 3 diamonds.

As the cards lay almost any reasonable line works, but this is the line that I took. RHO won Q and played another spade. I ended up establishing the long heart for my 12th trick.
I just didn't know if the first round club finesse was best or even reasonable.

I pass and come in later. If there is no later, then I'll be happy with my +200 or so.

People open lighter now as mentioned above, but I think W has a clear 1 opener. And when was last time you held a 20-count opposite partner's opening hand and stopped below slam?

Double would be penalty oriented, but this was not clear in the post.

Heck, if the club hook is on, there are a lot of layouts where 4 would make.

Yes the 5 suggests a poor suit, but QJ5xx would qualify as poor I believe.
Also, partner could have the K along with a Jack high suit, but I guess I'm betting against that specific holding.

Partner knows I don't have any points, so I encourage with the 10 to show my 3-card length and intermediates. There are not too many layouts where a continuation from partner will cost a trick.

Or I could just wait until I get in at T14 or so and lead a myself.

…or you could have simply said “Well, if holding my cards under the table indicates that I want partner to pass, then I will hold them above the table.”

FWIW, I see three other MN votes and they are all for 1NT, unless there are more MN names that I don't recognize.

2 is enough with this 9-loser hand.

My partner last night, also a MN player, chose 1, but has not voted in this poll.
