Worst trump suit making slam
(Page of 3)

I'm curious about hearing stories of making slams with a terrible trump suit, like a 4-0 fit.

When it comes to high cards, we might survive missing AJT98 if we find Ace doubleton.

7 years ago I was kibitzing Nordic championship and saw some declarers make a slam when missing AKx of trumps, leading low towards the queen in dummy and LHO jumping with Kx.

On the next 2 pages I will try to show 2 hands with a truly dreadful trump suit that made slam.

This story was published 1983. It includes only national team players and later Bermuda bowl winners.

I don't know the bidding, but South ended in a rather "shaky" 6. Unfortunate contract that may be, but E-W defence was even unluckier.

West lead the Ace of , taking care of South's 2 small s. And when declarer lead the 9 of  from dummy, East grabbed his ace. Declarer still had 3 red dummy entries, so picking up trumps was easy. At the other table, after some non successful guessing, declarer went 2 off... in 4.

I declared 6 on BBO last week, with this delicate trump suit, Q972 vs J543.

The opening lead was Jack of  and instead of giving up, I grabbed the Ace in dummy and tabled the Jack of . Rest is history.

(Sorry, I don't know how to set the play of the hand in the generator.)
